- Miriam Beard was a daughter of the noted American historians Charles A. Beard and Mary Ritter Beard. In her youth, she traveled widely with her parents. She became a journalist and wrote for various publications over her long career, including The New York Times. She was the author of several books, including A History of the Business Man and Realism in Romantic Japan. In 1927, she married Alfred Vagts, a German military historian. The family fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and returned permanently to the USA. The following year, Miriam Beard Vagts was one of the speakers at a major anti-Nazi rally sponsored by the American Jewish Congress at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Her son Detlev Vagts grew up to became a prominent scholar of international law.
