Meg is on holiday in Oxford from Guernsey with her sister when she meets Rayner a German student. However this is is 1939 and within a short time the island is occupied by German officers and when Rayner appears Meg is forced to decide between her twin loyalties.
I felt this book was alright as far as it went but promised so much more than it actually delivered and was very stilted at times. The characters weren't very likeable and were hard to believe at times.
I read this book as we have just marked 70 years since the liberation of the Channel Islands and it does show the privations of war both for the locals and the occupying force.
However there are better books of the period that you shoud rea.… (altro)
June 1944. 18-year-old Ginnie Travis helps out in her father's furniture shop in the suburbs of East London until continued bombardment and her unmarried sister's pregnancy force the sisters to Shropshire where they stay with their aunt. Ginnie falls for American Lieutenant Nick Miller, who is stationed nearby, but ends the relationship when she learns of his fiancée back home. When their father is killed during an air raid, Ginnie rushes home. The family is penniless and responsible Ginnie must take on her father's shop herself to earn a living for the family which now includes a baby. She faces many obstacles, not least of which is her ungrateful family and spoilt brat of an older sister. Okay read, but it just didn't flow as well as it could have and I didn't really like the characters.… (altro)
