Started this on the spur of the moment and went straight through. I know there has been mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it. It's an interesting concept, though hopefully not likely. I could see this as a full novel.

The Dolls
by James Patterson & Kacia Bel
2017
Hachette/Book Shots
4.0 /5.0

The dolls were considered an excellent idea. A women designed to cater to your every whim. A woman who was perfect in every way, at everything.....well almost...there was one little flaw. They may decide to kill you.
Lana Wallace, an Investigative reporter has never covered a story like this. Its tricky when you learn so many secrets.

The dolls are robots with artificial intelligence. They are created to be companions and sex objects for wealthy men. However several of these men are being killed. Lana, a reporter who recently moved to Boston, has caught this story. She is trying to determine who is killing the men, but in doing so, she becomes friends with one of the dolls.
Interesting story on how far technology has come, and what may be possible in the future.

I love these bookshots. Perfect for car trips or plane rides. I feel so accomplished reading an entire book in one sitting. This one was great, perfect for lovers of Westworld or the ideas of AI and what can be done with it. It wasn't hard to pick up on where they were going with the story, but kept me entertained and intrigued. I'd actually like to see another one pick up where this one leaves off. I really liked the characters and would enjoy reading more about them and following their stories.

This bookshot is about a string of murders that involves the executives of a major robotics company. This story had some great potential in the beginning but it just went downhill fast. I really wanted to love it but it just didn't live up to my expectations.

Yet another story where sentient robots have the KILL ALL HUMANS directive as part of their programming. In this case, the robots are unsuspecting sexbots that only the very rich can afford. A budding industry led by two sister companies, it comes to the attention of a former crime reporter from Chicago newly arrived as a financial reporter in Boston.

The story is remarkably predictable if not for the remarkably odd, platonic relationship the reporter develops with one of the sexbots. This was the primary theme of the story...but I just didn't get it. The reporter met several of these robots...but Sandra is the one she bonded with while seemingly ambivalent towards the others. Just odd.½

Reporter Lana Wallace stumbles onto an almost unbelievable story tied to the knifing murders of three men. Beautiful dolls, “perfect” companions, may have something to do with the murders. Or are they the victims? Lana intends to find out, but doesn’t realize she’s placing herself in grave danger.

This BookShots tale takes an intriguing notion and veers into quasi-science fiction territory. Limited character development, an issue with most BookShots, is a slight drawback, but the story grabs the reader in the beginning and, with its clever, twisting plot, manages to keep the pages turning as the tension ramps up the suspense. Although well-written, there’s a bit of a creepiness factor to the tale and the ending suggests readers may be in for a sequel. But there’s a thought-provoking aspect to the possibility of manipulating technology as in the story. Overall, “The Dolls” is a noteworthy to the series.
