Includes a history of the development of the picture book and a list of milestones in children's literature. This book is a combination of three books compiled by Arbuthnot: Time for Poetry, Time for Fairy Tales, and Time for True Tales.

Lots of illustrations give a feeling of the books cited. It has the feeling of what it is, a textbook for library science students, and as such, jumps from topic to topic (so if your professor assigns Chapter Three it's okay if you haven't read Chapter Two). Unfortunately, this leads to occasional minor glitches: Eleanor Cameron, considered in the section devoted to realistic fiction, is not identified as the author of the Mushroom Planet books. This is something that should be mentioned briefly in passing, because her style changes so from one genre to the other, that it's easy to believe she's two different people with coincidentally identical names. Overall, a good text or a fun book to browse through.½

The editor chose excellent books for this anthology, but there are too few illustrations. Even absolutely indispensable illustrations are missing. Mike Mulligan doesn't get one. That's sad.

Even though some of the stories ended up playing a role in my nightmares, I loved this book as a kid and couldn't put it down!

What I'd really like to know is how many people started reading with these at school???? In hindsight I find it ironic we were using these repetitive & simple books and at the same time being taught to write copperplate with nibs and ink.
I wish I could find an original cover picture which was a green cover, but have found an inside page illustration and another of the series original covers "Look and See". (click under the image - 2 more photos) to see them.

You can see most of the covers for the Dick and Jane series here;

It's a shame my copies were thrown out a few years back. ;( Going by the prices on the above site, they are worth collecting.

Provides inadvertent documentation of the sexism, and deception, involved in "teaching" small susceptible children. The author does acknowledge the fact that most children "hate poetry". The selection is one reason why. Largely drivel over pointless events that are not real in a child's life.

I just do not think a child is so young that "widdy-widdy-wurkey/ Is the name of my turkey" [11] is worth memorizing.

Of the best, of course, nothing beats a clever child's verse:

Old Quin Queeribus--
He loved his garden so,
He would n't have a rake around,
A shovel or a hoe.

For each potato's eyes he bought
Fine spectacles of gold,
and mufflers for the corn, to keep
Its ears from getting cold. [262] Zodiac Town, Nancy Turner

And there is plenty of Lewis Carroll, Blake, Mother Goose, Conkling, De la Mare, Dickinson, Farjeon, TS Eliot, Frost, Milne, Lear, Rossetti, Sandburg, Stevenson, Turner, Wynne, and some Shakespeare and Yeats. With Indices of Authors and First Lines.

1959 edition; good condition; some water marks; binding coming apart slightly at top and bottom; paid $1 at second hand store. I don't think they realized what they had.

My name is Jane so I love this classic.

This book consists of famous poems from the early 20th century. Mary Arbuthnot acquired many great poems and compiled them into this anthology. Children can read familiar poems in this book such as those by Mother Goose and T.S. Elliot.

This book had many poems in it. It had the poems arranged by diferent tags which made it easy to identify. There were many poems about the different types of play that the children do. There were some poems that used the letters of the alphabet to complete a poem. The arrangement of the book was helpful to locate items quickly. Even though the book is an older book it had a lot of neat poems to use throughout many lessons. I think you could use this book for lessons on friendships, about animals, and to help with learning the alphabet

Although officially a textbook for students of education and library science, this is also just a fine anthology that would be an excellent addition to any home with children. However, I must say that this revision has, for example, replaced the lovely retelling of "Cinderella" by Walter de la Mare with an earlier translation from the French which is probably too dry for most children. I still search for the edition I used to have, but haven't found it yet.
