The book centers around Alexander, a young boy who faces daily dilemmas due to his inability to make decisions. Whether it’s choosing a Halloween costume, picking clothes for school, or deciding on a school lunch, Alexander’s hesitation leads to amusing yet thought-provoking scenarios. His character is a perfect representation of the common struggles with decision-making that children face, making the story highly relatable.

Kell Andrews’ narrative is a blend of humor and insightful lessons, effectively conveying the message that indecision can lead to missed opportunities or let others make choices for us. The story reaches a pivotal moment on Alexander’s birthday when a decision about an ice cream sundae helps him realize the importance of making choices and the empowerment that comes with it. This narrative arc skillfully illustrates that learning from choices, whether they turn out to be good or bad, is an essential part of life’s journey.

Hector Borlasca’s illustrations in the book are a true delight. They are bright, colorful, and full of life, perfectly complementing Andrews’ storytelling. Each illustration is animated and expressive, making it easy for children to connect with Alexander’s emotions and understand the story’s nuances. The attention to detail in the illustrations ensures that they enhance the narrative without overwhelming it, making the book visually appealing to young readers.

The book not only entertains but also educates, making it a valuable tool for parents and educators. It teaches children that making choices is a skill that can be developed and that every choice, whether big or small, contributes to shaping one’s life. “This or That: A Story About Choosing” encourages children to embrace decision-making, highlighting that it is okay to make mistakes as they are opportunities for learning and growth.

This book is for primary aged students. This story tells about a young boy named Alexander that can't decide. . . ever. Whether it be what game to play, or what to eat for lunch, Alexander always feel like he takes too long to decide, or chooses the wrong thing altogether. So, Alexander decides that he wants to make no more decisions anything. But as it turns out, that was a decision as well: a wrong one. Alexander learns that something decisions were simply based on what he knows, and that mistakes are okay, because you can always pick something different next time.
This book teaches children a valuable lesson about making choices which is very relevant as early elementary students get older and start to make decisions regarding their own life rather than their parents/teachers making them for them. This would be a great book to read to kindergarten/1st grade students in class or at home, and could be followed by a discussion about the decision they face in their own lives.

I can't wait to share this book with my students! This book brings weather forecasting a fun, modern twist. Mira stinks at predicting futures, but she certainly can predict the weather! Readers learn about different weather tools and how they are used and follow along as Mira uses these and her observations to predict the weather for a surfing contest.

I was lucky enough to read an early draft of this. It is a thoughtful, fun and interesting novel for middle-grade readers. The characters are original and thoroughly compelling. Strongly recommended!
