Kind of slow at times, especially in the beginning and a little hard to get into but overall a really good read.

Plagued by doubt, burdened by fear, held captive by worry, trudging in the darkness of depression, shackled by the shame of the past, uncertain of your true identity? Are you searching for the confirmation of who you are - wondering what it is that defines you?

Discover who you are in Christ - open the pages of this book, and study the work book. This darkness and doubt that presses on the human race can be brushed away. Christ has called each of us to a life of victory free of the burdens of the past, courageous in the battle field for our souls, strong against the forces of evil. In this book the reader is taught to find their identity in Christ. Anderson explores what God truly thinks about each of us. He uses the scripture to shed light on the dark places of bondage in the readers life and challenges readers to confront the lies of the enemy - to no longer be defined by the lies but to embrace their identity in Christ. He further instructs readers on how to use scripture to form a firm foundation on which to build and renew their lives - leading to ultimate victory over the enemy.

Featuring a new introduction by Neil T. Anderson, this freshly re–covered edition of his bestselling book The Bondage Breaker (more than 1.2 million copies sold) leads readers away from the shadows and shackles in their lives and toward the freedom that comes when they

realize they have the right to be free
confront the power of Satan
fight the temptation to do it their way
trade deception for grace
affirm their identity in Christ

Neil Anderson ultimately helps people break negative thought patterns, control irrational feelings, and break out of the bondage of sinful behavior. Those struggling will discover how to embrace the promise of Jesus to win the spiritual battles that confront them.

I reviewed Neil Anderson's memoir (Long Road to Freedom) for my blog at the beginning of this year. In a couple of months I'm slated to review a book by someone else from the ministry he founded (Freedom in Christ). It made me want to dip back into the organization's foundational literature.

My first exposure to Victory over the Darkness was about twenty years ago, when it was fairly popular in the Christian publishing world. When i was in seminary, Anderson wasn't talked about much, except to offer a friendly critique of his approach. Dipping back in, I read appreciatively:

1. A focus on our identity in Christ and the freedom that, that brings.
2. A belief in sanctification (Jesus did just come to send us to heaven, but to make us holy).
3. Advice about dealing with sinful strongholds in your life and an exhortation to hold to God's purposes for us.

Of course I found stuff to disagree with, but by in large I found that Anderson articulates a helpful and compelling vision of freedom in Christ.

I like to read lots of kinds of books, but I think one of my favorite genres is memoir. I love to read people’s’ stories and hear the types of things that shaped them socially, intellectually and emotionally. In Christian memoirs, you also get to hear about conversion and call, the types of things that shaped a person’s convictions, and struggles along the way. Rough Road to Freedom is the story of Neil T. Anderson, best known in the Evangelical world for writing Victory Over the Darkness and The Bondage Breaker. Freedom in Christ Ministries, the ministry Anderson founded has helped people experience victory over demonic oppression and brought healing to their lives.

Anderson grew up on a farm and went on to serve in the US Navy and became an aeronautical engineer before feeling called to the ministry. He was a pastor and seminary professor (Talbot) before starting Freedom in Christ Ministries. Along the way, Anderson shares how his theology of God’s kingdom (and that other kingdom) develops, and his experience in helping people confront the power of darkness in their lives.

I enjoyed this book. Anderson is a person of integrity who has had his own struggles with bitterness and un-love, darkness and feelings of spiritual dryness, difficult circumstances and he has had to deal with his fair share of opposition. I enjoyed reading how his theology developed and of the many people he has been able to walk alongside and helped experience Christ’s freedom. I appreciated his graciousness with his opponents.

I do not necessarily agree with Anderson’s theology on every point, but I like his story. It also helps me contextualize some of his theological commitments. If you like Christian memoirs or are just interested in knowing more about this influential figure, this is a good book for you. Because Anderson focuses on his theological development and ministry experience, some may find this book a little less story oriented and ‘preachier’ than your typical memoir. I think that is a fair critique, but I liked it anyway (4 stars).

Thank you to Kregel Publications for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for this review.

The author shares his experiences in caring for his terminally ill wife and his time in the presence of God during these experiences. Even though we may suffer and grieve while on this earth God is always with us. Holding on to Him is what gets us through these times. I appreciate Anderson's story...the real story with the good and bad. He is an example to the rest of us.

I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Neil Anderson has long been one of my favorite nonfiction writers. He is biblically solid and backs all his writing with scripture. When a person accepts Christ as their Savior, scripture tells us “. . . , he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
This raises many questions we usually don’t ask, “How do I become new? What is passed away? What else becomes new?” Believers can go through their entire life without really knowing these answers. This book searches deep into finding out. Six chapters cover exactly what is “new” in our lives according to the Bible with 5 lessons for study.
This isn’t a read through it and be done book but a work through and learn one. It is filled with lots of scripture references, charts, and questions. I have been a believer for 35 years and it opened my eyes to “new” blessings I did not even consider. You can set your own pace. This would a wonderful personal or group study. It would also make a great book for churches to give their new converts.
I received this book free from Bethany Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Aside of the Bible, this book is one of my favorite books. It was recommended to me by my fiancé's mother. I am so thankful that I read it. The book walks you through recognizing pain and areas in your life that need repair. I enjoyed the approach and will share this with friends. The book does not condemn but uplifts. IFfyou approach it with an open heart and mind, you will walk away renewed.

Renewing Your Mind is a Bible study book, not a read-through book. It is designed for individual or small group study. It is organized into six week’s worth of bite-sized lessons. The lay-out reminded me of the scripture in Isaiah 28 that talks about learning precept upon precept, line upon line. This study does that. It was orderly and progressive.

This book is also one small part of a large quantity of Bible study books meant to be studied together and probably in order, too.

For each day there is a suggested passage of scripture to read (not included in the text), a commentary that usually included some sort of word picture, metaphor or analogy that was easy to understand, and questions to stir your thinking intended to help with application.

The question section has room (in the print edition) to write your answers in the book. And this section seemed most suited for small groups, as I found some of the questions to be frustrating or pointless, at least without someone to discuss them with.

The first two chapters (weeks) were foundational in nature and then succeeding chapters (weeks) were focused on specific topics that are common trouble points for many Christians, that is, anger, anxiety, depression, and handling loss.

This book contains lots of nuggets of wisdom and it seemed geared towards for Christians that were believers young in their faith or perhaps those who have not ever learned some basics of the Christian life for whatever reason.

If you are newer to the Christian faith or you teach a Sunday school class or cell group with newer believers check this book out. It may be just what you were looking for!
