This picture book would be good for primary readers. This book is a funny story that talks about which prehistoric animals are considered dinosaurs and which animals are not actually dinosaurs. I learned a lot of interesting information through this story and at the end of the book, there is a timeline for the prehistoric animals that are talked about as well as some additional information about the animals which is why this book would be useful in a primary school classroom.

This adorable picture book highlights what is and what is not in the definition of dinosaur. This is a fun informational text that introduces us to crazy cool creatures that existed with dinosaurs but are not classified as dinosaurs. This book is great for students who need to learn how to describe something. This is also a great book for the kids who call every old animal, 'dinosaur.'

Cute! A toddler's book but still told me a couple of things I didn't know about sharks! It also mentioned their endangerment.½

This book has so many characteristics of a great non-fiction children's book. First impression is eye-catching. The size, weight, and cover design is unique and captivating. The perfect square proportions, the high contrast art, and the hints of reflective stars make this book a kid magnet. The pages are similar to a board book without the overwhelming weight and bulk. There is also no end pages or white space to lose a child's attention. Each page consists of 2-3 letters with its accompanying universe fact. All ages will find something amazing to learn, see, or ask more about. Where most science books might "dumb it down" to reach a younger target audience, this book finds a balance of simplicity and wonder. Even as an adult, there were terms I was unfamiliar with. The back cover has a brief section about the American Museum of Natural History. This leads me to believe this book would be found in the museum gift shop instead of a class library. I would bet they sell out quickly.

So, this book is about as good as any group project - which is to say, a bit bland. But, it is a decent example of a purely expository text and has a good layout.

The text starts with the pups a few weeks old, once they have fur and are ready to start venturing out of the den. The book follows the pups as they nurse, explore their family, and are fed by their parents. Various family groups are shown and there are lots of cute wolf pups playing, feeding, and tussling in the grass. Adult behavior is shown through their interaction with the pups and the behavior the pups are learning like howling and running with the pack.

Each page is a mix of blocks of text with pastel backgrounds and pictures of wolves demonstrating the behavior or attribute discussed in the text. The book ends with the pups as young wolves, not yet ready to go out on their own and still sticking together. Over the course of the book, the scenes move from spring to winter, as the pups mature. The only back matter is a "meet the expert" note from Neil Duncan, who presumably supervised the book.

So, this isn't necessarily the type of book one would hold up as an example of the genre. There are no sources, there isn't even a single author. The writing is rather clunky and dry. BUT it's still not a bad book! It's got lots of great pictures of wolves, the text and photographs have an excellent layout that matches up the behavior with what is described in the text, and for kids who prefer expository nonfiction (and like wolves) this is a perfect choice.

Verdict: While I wouldn't recommend this for storytime, it's a good book for school projects or for kids who want to learn more about wolves.

I think this is a good book to use to help children learn abc's while also teaching them about animals

This is a companion app for an exhibit entitled Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence (created by the American Museum of Natural History) that explores the organisms that produce light (i.e. fireflies, glowworms), how they do so, and how scientists study this phenomenon. Interactive animations, photo galleries, informative text, and videos included throughout the app provide extensive coverage of each topic covered by the app. The app also has a section providing background on what is in the exhibit and how the exhibit was created. Each chapter of the app is set to a different soundtrack. This app is recommended for users ages four and up. The app is simple to navigate and use, with lit-up arrows showing users the appropriate directions to slide the screens. In addition to the app, there is also a web component to the exhibit. Although some of the same information is covered on the website as in the app, the website is more text-heavy and less interactive. There is no advertising on this app. It is compatible only with iPads. It is recommended to be used to teach young children about the topic of bioluminescence, regardless of whether or not they have seen the exhibit.

Very clear and lovely illustrations. Pronunciation guides! Yay for pronunciation guides! Unusual dinosaurs- not the usual cast of ABC characters, which is extra-engaging for the jaded five-year-old who knows all the REGULAR dinosaurs already. The oversized board book is perfect for lap-reading, too.
