This is a memoir that I can totally relate with as I grew up with my maternal grandfather living just down the street who passed when I was 19. I also moved to the big city a few years later in much the same way as Gary did. Now neither of us grew up on a farm, but in light of some of the hardships my grandfather endured along with the memories that the author relates, the little moments he never thought would be important; I can understand where the author is coming from and how he has let us live our lives again through his Grandpa. In the light of worldwide events in the 21st century, I was strangely moved by the recounting of his ‘Boston’ experience in the marathon as related in the latter pages of Part 1. After reading this book, I am grateful for the values that my grandfather in his rather quiet and firm manner, left with me that I still remember, seventy years later.
