- Elsie Allen (22 September 1899 – 31 December 1990) was a Native American Pomo basket weaver from the Cloverdale Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California in Northern California, significant as for historically categorizing and teaching Californian Indian basket patterns and techniques and sustaining traditional Pomo basketry as an art form.

While brief, this book would be of value even if the only part you read was the biography of Elsie Allen. But in addition you can learn to make baskets, using the numerous drawings and photographs of the steps . There is a section on gathering, dyeing, and preparing natural materials; detailed instructions for making coiled and twined baskets and baby baskets; and a brief description of feather baskets (of course, possession of songbird feathers is against US law now).
