This was a f**ked up story. There were so many things happening that are horrifically wrong. I get that this is fiction, it still felt wrong reading some of these scenes.

About halfway through this book, I contemplated not finishing it. The pace had slowed and there wasn't a lot happening. The second half picked up and had a lot of twists and turns that I did not anticipate. I liked the ending and I am glad I did not give up on the story.

This is not my favorite Megan Abbott book and I think it is because I don't find the sport of cheer very exciting. The story itself was good, I just found all of the cheer information distracting.

That was messed up and it reminds me of Tonya Harding. The sad part is, this stuff actually happens. People take sports way too seriously.

Another interesting mystery from Megan Abbott. This book had such a sad ending, poor Diane.

Well that was a messed up story! I definitely did not guess what was happening but it all made perfect sense once the cause was revealed.

Not my typical genre, but so well written, the story just grabbed me. Suspense and dread in the northern Michigan landscape where pregnant Jacy is meeting her father-in-law for the first time. Surreal atmosphere with fireworks and wild animals.

I watched a few ballet documentaries lately so I thought this book would be perfect for me but this was filled with creepy / inappropriate behavior by all adults and populated by totally unlikeable characters.

I will say the author built a strong atmosphere around this family and ballet school but who would want to feel this way?

Run of the mill, predictable thriller about an elite gymnast and what her family will do to protect her and advance her career. I wasn't particularly impressed.

I've enjoyed Megan Abbott's other books, but this one . . . not so much. It's very dark, which I usually like, but I felt like I needed to take a shower after I finished reading it. The characters are all thoroughly unlikeable, slippery, enigmatic, and annoying, although I think a lot of that was Ms. Abbott's writing style which seemed unnecessarily loopy at times rather than straightforward. This was probably my least favorite of her novels.

Creepy thriller about a pregnant woman who visits her father-in-law with her husband and then the fun begins. There is a looming sense of dread throughout, and although the story is a little far-fetched, it's entertaining. I enjoyed it.½

I apparently need a shelf for things I read because it turns out that I need more books than I can carry for two weeks in Europe and there's no English language bookstores in the Swiss Alps and my library app limits what I can download internationally.

This book is utter crap. Complete and utter crap. Paper thin characters. The least mysterious mystery. I'm not totally sure Megan Abbott was ever a teenage girl, but, wow, that is NOT what it's like. Also, it reads super slowly. I seriously considered DNF'ing it despite having literally no reading alternative. Not really any redeeming features.

Partially a slog, but overall a page turner, with a twist. Kind of odd. I didn't take to another Little Free Library because it's gory in places, probably not for younger readers.

Couldn't finish this one. I know many of these parents/families exists, but these folks were just plain annoying. Sorry, got to move on.

Superbly suspenseful story of flawed women. One lives with a vicious compulsion, while two others are willing to make difficult compromises to get what they want, all with tragic consequences.

Gothic horror story. Well written. Don't like stories about helpless woman. No surprise at the end. It's Rebecca meets Rosemary's Baby meets Get Out !

I loved this book in so many different ways; the ways the girls were described as "untouchable" as cheerleaders (who doesn't think that in the microcosm of high school) and the wonderfully descriptive writing of Abbott--such as the "squall of a blow dryer" ---sounds so much better than "after I blow dried my hair", don'tcha think?

Loved the way her teen characters talked to each other.

Loved the way Beth was so intense and changeable.

Loved the plot and how I never saw the ending coming.

If I had read this in high school, I would have yearned to be like these girl, so cool, so alive...so dangerous and full of mayhem.

This suspenseful domestic thriller centers around a very creepy father-in-law and a home at the end of the woods in Upper Michigan. I usually like Abbott's books because they involve conflicts between women (loved Dare Me), but this one takes place over a week's time and has more of a "it's-coming-from-inside-the house" plot. I don't think it's her best.

I feel like this is a book that will stay with me. I could hardly stand to put it down. I just felt compelled to keep reading even as I was repelled and disturbed by the story. It's unsettling but there is a beauty in Abbott's words that's undeniable too.

I read some of Abbott's books some years ago - the Neo-pulp stories - and had put off reading her newer work, not sure if I'd be as drawn in by the modern settings. But the way she weaves words together is spellbinding: her stories are so intense they crawl right inside of you. It's definitely more that I love her work than just the time setting of the earlier books. Will definitely catch up on her other novels now.
