This was recommended on the back of Bright Lights, Big City in some corner of the internet. It is certainly quirky and an okay read, I can see why people would see similarities between the two. For me though, Bright Lights, Big City is an underrated classic. This just does not have the execution and can be a bit hit-and-miss in parts. Unfortunately, the book did not do anything for me at all. I must admit I did not even finish reading it, which is a very rare thing indeed. I am not quite sure what the author wanted to achieve, either. It went rambling on aimlessly, introducing random (female) characters. Maybe this is what it is like to be in a guy's head? I am so sorry, should that be the case. :-( Questa recensione è stata scritta per gli Omaggi dei Membri di LibraryThing . Richard Perez is the Van Gogh of writers. He is genius with the written word, but the stories are so dark that it can, at times, be hard to travel with him.As stated above, this is the story of Martin Sierra, yes he is addicted to his personals, but I think mostly he's addicted to finding love and this seems to be the best way to meet women. The sad part is he is in LOVE with Nikki, who he met through the personals. She is bisexual, and was looking for a friend when she met Martin. It breaks my heart because they both keep floating to relationships that are toxic, and missing the one that would be good for them...with each other. Martin is also a writer, and we see the frustration of being a native new yorker and aspiring writer...or aspiring to be "paid" writer is like. Very sad and tragic. He has a job, working on imports/exports...didn't really understand what it is he does...and I don't think he does either but it beats scrubbing toilets. lol I'm giving this 3 stars, it's a good read. I like Richard Perez's writing. However, it jumps around in time a lot and is at times a little hard to follow where Martin is at within the story. I found this book interesting, it wasn't really my cup of tea but I was grateful to be able to review it . For once I actually had no slue where the book was going which was kind of refreshing after always being able to know as soon as a I start a book
The setting of The Losers Club is New York City. And it tells the story of Martin Sierra, an unlucky writer addicted to the personals. Early he encounters Nikki, his dream woman, who remains unattainable romantically, yet who becomes his friend and confidant during his comic misadventures. Set amid the vibrant bars and clubs of the East Village during the mid s, this exhilarating novel is as much about a generation (we wont say X) as it is about a specific time and place.
