good assignment ideas on literacy and research ( )

Some great ideas in this book, but the majority of the exercises are geared toward classes with a heavy information literacy focus, if not entirely devoted to information literacy. Some of the exercises can be adapted to one-shot instruction sessions, but not all.

The biggest criticism I have for the book is the layout of the exercises. The exercises are not well demarcated from the rest of the text and the side bars for a particular exercise might be on the following page or two after the exercise is initially introduced.

But overall, an excellent book and I've already incorporated some exercises into my instruction sessions. ( )

Excellent resource for semester-long information literacy courses, but the majority of the exercises can be adapted for 50-75 minute one-shots on specific topics. This is not a worksheet-ready, copy-and-go book. You'll have to do some work tailoring to fit your course/subject, and some of the exercises are fairly standard fare. It's a tad pricey, but probably worth purchasing for your library. If you're on your own dollar, consider interlibrary loan. ( )

This presents some excellent teaching suggestions for very ideal situations. Given that I have (essentially) a one-shot information literacy class, most of the suggestions were useless to me. However, perusing it did provide some interesting ideas, and the section on information overload provided some nifty notes in one lesson. All-in-all, if you are lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective) enough to have several long sessions to help college students learn how to use and evaluate information services, this book is a great starting point. It doesn't have much in the way of citation, though, so you'll need at least one other book (a style manual). It's still worth a quick perusal and read, though-especially if your library will house (and buy) it for you! ( )
