Summary:
This historic realism picture book is about Thomas Jefferson. It begins with introducing him to the reader and the things that he liked and discovered. Something that was extremely important to him was food. When Thomas Jefferson went to France, he discovered even more food and couldn't wait to introduce those foods to America. After returning to America, he prepared for his feast and was eager to share with America all of his discoveries.

Personal Reaction:
I think this would be a great book to introduce to youngsters. It's a part of our history, and it is appropriate for a young reader to learn and understand. The illustrations were fantastic by depicting the setting, clothes that were worn, and the hairstyles from that era.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Thomas Jefferson wanted to introduce new foods to people in America. We can have a day where we try new foods. Everyone can bring in one item to share. I would make sure to bring in a variety of things to make sure there is plenty for each student to try.
2. After trying new foods, we can write about our experience. What was my favorite food? What was my least favorite food? Did I try everything? ( )

This is a simple, yet interesting story of Thomas Jefferson's love of food and how his stay in France is responsible for introducing America to tomatoes, macaroni and cheese, french fries, and ice cream. It also mentioned his invention of the dumbwaiter. Very interesting and well researched. ( )

This biography is about our third president. We learn a different side of Thomas Jefferson, what I called the more human side. He loved to eat, grow a garden, and invent things. He even invented the dumbwaiter, which is still in house today. We also learn about his years spent in France and can thank him for some of the foods we eat today.

My oldest son loved this book when he was younger. He thought it was cool that he liked some of the same things as one of our presidents. He also thought the book was funny because of the pictures.

As an extension, I would also use this to introduce the biography genre to my class. I would have the various foods that were mentioned in the book as a snack while I read the book aloud. I would also have the whole class, along with me, build a dumbwaiter in our classroom. I would also like to take them on a field trip to plant some trees in a nearby park. Last, I would have the children grow a garden in our classroom and then let them eat what we grew. ( )
