Comic and Graphic Books. Fantasy. Fiction. HTML:

Set in the imaginative realm of the award-winning comic book series FABLES, the book takes place long ago, in the deepest dark of The Black Forest. Two brothers -- Peter Piper and his older brother Max -- encounter ominous forces that change them both irreparably. Thus begins an epic tale of sibling rivalry, magic, music and revenge that spans medieval times to the present day, when their deadly conflict surfaces in the placid calm of modern day Fabletown.

PETER & MAX: A FABLES NOVEL features the prose of award-winning comic book writer Bill Willingham and the lush ink drawings of FABLES artist Steve Leialoha. The novel also reveals secrets of some of the regular FABLES series cast members including Bigby Wolf, Frau Totenkinder and Bo Peep. Also included is an 8-page sequential story by Willingham and Leialoha that serves as a bridge to the FABLES titles.

I liked this book a lot but must admit that my prior knowledge of the comic book Fable (one of my favorite comics) probably helped further my enjoyment. ( )

This one ended up feeling drearily bleak, even with a realtively "happy" ending. It drolled on and on, despite the book being quite short. ( )

It should come as no surprise to readers of the Fables graphic novels that Bill Willingham's writing style translates perfectly from the graphic novel format to novel-style narratives. He creates a compellingly interwoven story of the Pied Piper (of Hamlin fame) and Peter Piper (yes, the one who ate a pickled pepper), who were once brother but became foes after the family heirloom flute was passed onto the younger brother of the two. Willingham exploits the classic sibling rivalry to explain the back story of these two characters, even while preserving much of the original tales. It is most definitely a tale well told, and I was especially happy to see evidence of a Germanic fairytale world (Hesse) and the myriad of characters who created the legends of the Brothers Grimm. as deep as a mud puddle, but enjoyable. i long for half a dozen books like this, exploring the backstories of lesser-known fables characters. ( )

As a fan of the Fables graphic novel series, I happily found this book in my library. Loved this book from beginning to end. Happy to have illustrations throughout to go with the story. Basically it's the story of Peter and Max Piper. Good and bad brothers and what led them to be good/bad. Loved the backstory of how it came to be and of course in the present with Peter trying to find Max. Excellent ending and one that I did not see coming. ( )

The characters and stories are very engaging, the tension real, the mythos powerful. There's everything to like about Peter & Max, even if you've never cracked a Fables comic.

Peter & Max isn’t a bad book, it just isn’t a good one, either. It’s a fast read with just enough substance to appeal to dedicated Fables fans, but it isn’t satisfying enough to recommend to anyone else.

This novel is dedicated to Mike,

wonderful lands with me long ago,

For most of his long years, Peter Piper wanted nothing more than to live a life of peace and safety in some remote cozy cottage, married to his childhood sweetheart, who grew into the only woman he could ever love.
Somewhere in New York City there's a tiny, secretive neighborhood no one knows about except those who live there and a few scattered others in our wide world.
