Grand Cayman Slam is one of Randy Wayne White’s manly pulp novels written as Randy Striker in the early 1980s. The reoccurring character, former SEAL and current fishing guide Dusky MacMorgan, is called away from Key West to help an old pal, Wes O’Davis, in Grand Cayman. O’Davis, investigating the kidnapping of a local teenager, is Irish but seems to have a Scottish accent, at least on paper.

MacMorgan, known for his love of women who meet tragic ends, starts early in the story by getting picked up and seduced by a lovely young stewardess, a “wild island girl with the lilting Cayman accent” and featuring “the heavy swell of mammary development.” Afterwards there’s violence. White doesn’t call them his “duck and fuck” books for no reason. There are also some guns, smuggling and murder.

I liked this type of pulp adventure book as a boy and they’re still fun to read at times. ( )
