He was bred to be a champion. He was born to run. Everyone said he would be one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Everyone said he would take a place in history next to Triple Crown winners like the fabled Secretariat. Then, in one sickening, heart-stopping moment, everything changed. For Racing Fans of All Ages

Though this book is clearly meant for younger readers, this emotional telling of the life and death of the famous and much loved Barbaro can easily be enjoyed by readers of all ages. In the process of telling the story, the author explains much about horse racing and all that is involved, as well as treating us to a series of unfolding snapshots that draw us into sharing the life of this famous race horse, and those around him that loved him dearly. Hard to read it without tearing up. ( )

This life-story about the famous race horse is written for a younger fan group, but can be read and enjoyed by all. It includes all of Barbaro's life, from his birth to his soldiering on before death. This is a book for general fans of horse racing or for anyone who loved Barbaro. It is informative but simple and told somewhat through the eyes of America's favorite horse. In these pages you will learn a little about horse racing and a lot about a horse that captured the hearts of millions. Since this story is told from a horse's perspective or with his thoughts in mind, expect the tale to have just a little flick of fiction thrown in for the purpose of dramatic flair. ( )

A very well done, semi-fictionalized biography of Barbaro aimed at a younger audience. It reminded me a lot of the books I loved as a kid -- "Come on Seabiscuit" and "Man o' War" by Walter Farley. ( )

On January 29, 2007, Barbaro's owners, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, were forced to make the painful decision to put down their beloved horse, who had fought valiantly for nearly a year with an injury so great, almost no one believed he'd survive for so long. The odds had finally caught up with his brave animal.
The world mourned Barbaro's death, especially his owners and the caretakers who had loving ly tended him from birth, through his training and brilliant racing career, and through his heroic battle against his devastating injury. But the example Barbaro left for all of us-the courage and grace with which eh fought adversity and faced uncertainty-are here for all time. he is a champion for the ages.
