i'm expecting this to be hilarious a) because it was written in 1936, b) because it's the bobbsey twins, and c) because they're in ESKIMO LAND!!!! WTF!!!

this is so bad that i think i need to put it down - which says a lot, to get me to stop reading a weird kids' series book. i was totally expecting the racism, etc, that the bobbsey twins usually bring, but i guess i'm just not up for the absurd plot twists and how the bobbseys parent (lord, don't get me started). let me share just this sequence:

freddie (who is four? five?) wanders off in eskimo land (as usual) to some guy's home to fix the bobbseys' new husky puppy's foot (way to say no to your kids, mrs. bobbsey). while the guy is looking at the dog, freddie picks up a bow and arrow (never mind that the bow is probably larger than he is and no way could he possibly pull an arrow back far enough to shoot it more than a few feet), shoots an arrow out the door and into a crowd of people, where it somehow manages to kill a gull, which happens to be a very rare bird in eskimo land. instead of staying mad at freddie, everyone thinks he's good luck! WTF!

other pet peeve: a blizzard comes up and everyone is freaking out that they might starve in a few days because the boat from down south hasn't arrived with all their dried fruit and canned meat. right, because before the white settlement workers, the indigenous people ate snow and huddled for warmth. WTF!

wait, this is a bobbsey twins book. dial it down a notch, self. i think i need to put it away. ( )
