The plot develops very much as any other story in this particular sub-genre of historical romance, but the quality of the writing lifts it far above the pack.
The sub-plot involving a French conspiracy adds zest to the narrative, as do the occasional references to coal, steam, and the industrial revolution.
The authenticity of the local colour in this and Ms Mallory's other historical novels is refreshing, making most other works in the genre appear two-dimensional and monochromatic. (
