Ten stories from the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights, including the well-known ones of Aladdin and the lamp, Ali Baba and the forty thieves, and Sinbad the sailor.
This story has the origins of Aladdin, and Sinbad, and so many more. It has influenced the world of story telling in so many ways, and brought to life so much of the culture, and mythology of the east into the west. The whole concept of genies and djinn was popularized through this work. Check it out if you ever get the chance. This particular translation did a good job of blending the feel of ancient times with more modern understandable prose. ( )
A quote from Mark Helprin's introduction: "Running unavoidably throughout A Thousand Nights and A Night are the themes of captivity, escape, the restoration of a shattered past, and voyages in strange and frightening lands."
"This edition, the work of Kate Douglas Wiggin, is based on two previous English translations of two different Arabic texts. Both translators revised, rearranged, and abridged their versions, and one was just beginning his study of Arabic." -- page viii
This is a very nice edition of stories retold from the Arabian Nights canon written for middle grades and older and illustrated with Maxfield Parrish color plates from the 1909 edition. There were several stories that I did not read as a child/pre-teen and a couple that I have not yet encountered in the Burton version that I have also been reading off and on. I enjoyed Wiggin's selection and think it would be a good introduction for anyone. Recommended.

(Preface by Kate Douglas Wiggin): Little excuse is needed, perhaps, for any fresh selection from the famous "Tales of a Thousand and One Nights," provided it be representative enough, and worthy enough, to enlist a new army of youthful readers.
There was an emperor of Persia named Kosrouschah, who, when he first came to his crown, in order to obtain a knowledge of affairs, took great pleasure in night excursions, attended by a trusty minister.
(Introduction by Helprin) The book you hold in your hand may be more of a mystery than you think.

Sinbad then gave him one hundred sequins more, received him into the number of his friends and desired him to quit his porter's employment, and come and dine every day with him, that he might have ample reason to remember Sinbad the voyager and his adventures.

This is The Scribner Illustrated Classics version, edited by Kate Douglas Wiggin and illustrated by Maxfield Parrish. Please DO NOT combine with other abridgements unless they have the same ISBN or you have confirmed they are exactly the same work with the same translator/editor. Please DO NOT combine abridgements with single volumes or complete sets. If in doubt, please DO NOT combine. Especially not when combining large numbers of copies. It takes a lot of time and effort to separate and recombine works.
