To be frank, I probably would not use this book in my classroom. Where it does offer a lot of information, I just don't see myself teaching with it. I would include this in a classroom library for those students who were fascinated by art and famous artists, but I don't see this being used in a lesson. I think students may like this if they are into art, and I would put this book into my 5th grade classroom if I ever acquired it. To be 100% honest, this book confused me and I honestly had no idea how to sum it up. I know this book explains his life towards the end, but I honestly would not put this in a biography section of my classroom.

If I could see myself using this book at all, I would use it in a social skills lesson about dedication. Before Georges Seurat became the famous painter he is, he would make many studies where he would paint and draw several pieces before he even started his final work. This would show students that sometimes practice, hard work, and dedication will get you what you want/where you want to be in life. ( )

In my opinion, this is a very good book for an art classroom. Initially, I thought this was a book that had a plot and told a story, but it was not. The language in this book is very descriptive and informative, but still written in a friendly tone. For instance, the author starts the paragraph with, “How about this? La Grande Jatte is huge—around seven feet high and ten feet wide! You might say that it doesn’t just hang on a wall. It completely covers a good-sized wall. And if the painting itself is big, so is the scene it shows.” I like the author’s use of language because he sets an exciting and engaging tone throughout the whole book. Another thing I liked was the organization of the book. The author put all the important topics and or questions to be answered in a larger purple font. Any words or phrases that needed to be emphasized were put in a larger font as well, even if it was in the middle of a sentence. In addition, the organization of the book was helpful because in the beginning, the author started out with the famous painting La Grande Jatte in its entirety. As the pages went on, the author broke the focus into different sections of the painting, and eventually specific objects in the painting. It was helpful that as the book progressed, the painting was being analyzed more and more in depth. This book is definitely written in an interesting way that captures the readers interest. There is no main idea to this book, but the purpose is to get the reader to think about the painting on a surface level, and eventually to analyze even the smallest aspects of the painting, such as, the little butterfly on the ground (something I did not even notice until the book asked me to). I loved this book, although I have questions about whether or not an elementary child will appreciate it. The sentences are not very complex, and would not intimidate the reader. My favorite part of the book is the the seek and find section. I think that children will love the challenge of finding the hidden pictures in Seurat’s work. Personally, the expressionism period of art is my favorite so seeing work by Renoir, and Monet was an added bonus. I feel that a middle school child or a high school child will better appreciate the information contained. I think that the book will have limited appeal for young children. I feel that in an elementary classroom, this book would be best utilized by an art teacher who will educate the students about Seurat and his work. ( )

This book was very informative not only on the life of Georges Seurat, but also about one of his most famous paintings-La Grande Jatte. This book would be very helpful to a young art student studying Seurat or a student who is interested in pointillism. This book was also a very interesting read. I did not know much of the information in the book, and I found it to be interesting. It made me want to learn more about Seurat. Overall- a great book for art lovers. ( )
