"Flip's Fantastic Journal" is a book that is set up to act as an actual journal for the main character Flip. Starting off as a school assignment that Flip isn't too excited about because he doesn't like to write, he keeps his entries rather short but writes a lot about his day overall. On Saturday he states that his day was very boring and lonely because his friend couldn't play with him and so he was forced to play with his sister who ditched him for her own friends. All of a sudden he remembers that his teacher said he could write a make believe entry in it if he wanted. So he imagined his day going better in new and different ways.

Since the book is set up like a journal, the structure of the book is similar to that of an elementary student actually writing in a journal. This includes the font, images, grammar and spelling that would be found by actual elementary students. When reading this book it encourages a child's imagination. For the first half of the book, when Flip is discussing his actual life and what is happening in his reality, the drawings are in black and white. However when he imagines his perfect Saturday, he borrows his sister's markers and makes it colorful to represent a more exciting day.
