One star-studded night, five-year-old Lili witnesses her mother, Roxanna, sprout wings and vanish into the sky, undisturbed by the rules of gravity. Roxanna leaves no farewell, no word of explanation, no trace of her existence. Lili's subsequent search for her mother - spurred by the tireless efforts of her aunt Miriam the Moon - is at the heart of this mesmerising epic tale that follows Roxanna, born as a bad-luck child in the harsh Jewish ghetto of Tehran, through the opulent world of Iran's aristocracy to the whorehouses of Turkey and beyond, to present day Los Angeles. At stake are Roxanna's hopes for happiness, for escaping the bonds of Old World tradition and finding forgiveness for that most terrible of sins - desire. Weaving together strands of Persian and Jewish culture with heartbreaking, lyrical prose, Gina Nahai brings to life a courageous circle of women rooted in their homeland but trying to reshape their lives as exiles in a new world.… (altro)

This book was certainly a page-turner. It was easy to become attached to the story and yearn for what happened next. It was just so sad... it didn't seem that anything good happened to any of the characters. That was hard to deal with. Regardless, it is a great story and creates a new angle to the perspective of life ( )

This novel tries to have a story of redemption, but the characters spend so much time hiding their passions that they become flat and dead, even when pursuing life and love. ( )

This novel was absolutely gorgeous. Very vivid imagery and characters, artful magical realism, fluid writing. I adored it. ( )

As I watch her now, three hundred and ninety-three pounds and gaining by the day, her frame so vast she has not been able to pull it upright in more than two months or to fit through any doorway without first having to take the door off its hinges, her breath so stormy it makes the dogs bark allt he way up and down the street where she now lives with her sister in Los Angeles, and sets the piano in their neighbor's house playing mad tunes at odd hours of the night, it is impossible to believe that my mother Roxanne the Angel, was once a young woman with watercolor eyes and translucent skin, that she oculd stop the world with her laughter and compel men, my father among them, to follow her across an entire city without knowing why the chased her or what they would do if ever she stopped and answered their calls, that she had been so light and delicate, so undisturbed by the rules of gravity and the drudgery of human existence, she had grown wings, one night when the darkenss was the color of her dreams, and flown into the star-studded night of Iran that claimed her.
