A history of adoption in Britain, and the true-life tale of the 71-year-old Hodder triplets. The book tells the unique and moving story of how the triplets, adopted as babies in 1932, were reunited in June 2001 - the first time the three of them had been together since their birth. Their life stories and how they found each other again are interspersed with the story of adoption, which began as a legal phenomenon in the UK in 1926. The book also describes the 25-year legal battle fought by NORCAP (the National Organisation for the Counselling of Children and Parents) to change the adoption laws, which helped to bring the triplets, and other adoptees, together again. Hunter Davies interviewed the triplets at length and has had access through NORCAP to other case histories, themselves profoundly affecting.… (altro)

Excellent book covering the beginnings of legal (government controlled) adoption in the United Kingdom (1926) and following the case of triplets, separated soon after birth, and the efforts made over 40 odd years to re-unite them with each other and their siblings, including a good legal battle. Plenty of good photographs of people and places plus images of birth certificates/certificates of adoption are supplied, but I would have liked some maps, some copies or transcripts of other relevant documents/indexes, a pedigree or family tree and the legislation concerned (as an appendix, perhaps). The lack of references and bibliography lets the work down a tad, but o/w very good, useful and enjoyable reading, and thank the Lord it has an index - other authors/compilers, take note! ( )

Fascinating story of triplets born in 1932. Mother died day after and father who had six further children put them up for adoption. They went to three separate - and different - families. They meet again aged sixty-nine. Hunter Davies tells story with sensitivity and a good historical perspective. ( )
