Raymond Rosenthal I think that this is my favorite book, that I've read so far, by Anthony Browne. The first thing that I noticed was how sad the story was, at first. A young child's father has no time to give her attention, something that is very detrimental to children. The next thing I noticed was that it follows the "fairy godmother" archetype through the use of a gorilla that comes to life and takes the young girl on an adventure. I love how it creates a scenario where the young girl ends up escaping her reality and ends up finding happiness. The story also has a good ending when her father is finally able to take her to the zoo to see the gorillas. Hannah was crazy about gorillas but her dad was too busy with work to take her to the zoo. In fact her dad was too busy to do anything with her. The night before her birthday Hannah went to bed really excited because she had asked her dad for a gorilla. She work up in the middle of the night and found a present that had a toy gorilla in it. Hannah went back to sleep but then the gorilla grew and became life like. Hannah and the gorilla decided to go to the zoo, the movies and got something to eat. Then they went back home. When Hannah woke up she went downstairs and saw her dad waiting for her and he asked her if she wanted to go to the zoo. This book is about a little girl who has always wanted to see a gorilla but her father is too busy to take her and ignores her request. Then one night a gorilla shows up in her room and takes her on adventures. I thought his book was also very odd but the illustrators use of color really has a lot of symbolism.
You know you're in for a special treat when you see the witty background detail of the book's cover illustration; there's King Kong smashing biplanes and a freighter full of bananas silhouetted against the night skyline of a Magritte-like town. And the promise is more than fulfilled by this unassumingly complex story of a reconciliation between humanity and beast. Premi e riconoscimentiElenchi di rilievo
