This book I bought because of the intriguing title and because it was reduced in price. (If I didn't like it, not much harm would be done, was my idea back then.)

It has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time. After the initial interest there were so much more books that were interesting too and kept creeping in front of this one.

But now I've finally read it and, I must say that I like it a lot. For me it gives a good idea about how life was in the late 19the century in China. Family traditions, rules, a touch of politics, machinations, hope, love, cheating, addictions, it is all in here. As I name them, it indeed is a lot for not such a big book.

I like the main character, loved to follow him on his route through life. Too bad the book ends where it does: I would have loved to read more about him. ( )
