A collection of definitive speeches and one-liners with sources ranging from U.S. presidents to history's greatest villains, captains of industry to Albus Dumbledore himself This collection of speeches and one-liners from some of the world's most influential minds shows what comes from choosing the right words, and what truly makes a good leader. Some of the speeches include President Abraham Lincoln's brief but inspiring Gettysburg Address, Elizabeth I's stirring speech, and Kennedy's rousing inaugural speech in which he said the famous words "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." Other famous entries include great innovator Steve Jobs sharing his ideas: "You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right;" Mao Tse-Tung's gung-ho vision: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun;" and Martin Luther King's optimism: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that." Also included are more irreverent entries by individuals such as George Bernard Shaw: "He knows nothing and thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career;" Groucho Marx: "Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men—the other 999 follow women;" and Winston Churchill: "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."  … (altro)

It is a very good short read.

This booklet is one of the 25 in the "Marines in World War II Commemorative Series", published by the U.S. Marine Corps. This one is about the 1st Marine Division's (Major General William H. Rupertus commanding) operation on the west coast of New Britain, from December 26, 1943, to May 4, 1944. Cape Gloucester is on the very western tip of the island, which is in General Douglas MacArthur's Southwest Pacific Area and under Lieutenant General Walter Krueger's Sixth U.S. Army.

The maps are generally very good. The first two maps are quite hard to read. There should be a map of the New Britain and New Ireland area. There should be a map to show where they are in reference to Australia and the rest of the world. Although this is a Marine Corps publication, there is even mention of 'Army dog handlers and their animals.' The use of Piper L-4 Cubs and Stinson L-5s are described. There is no table of contents nor any index. There is a good bibliography in Sources, at the end.

Sidebars:
-- Major General William H. Rupertus
-- The Fortress of Rabaul
-- The Jungle Battlefield
-- Rain and Biting Insects
-- An Improvised Air Force (the Piper L-4s and Stinson L-5s)
-- New Weapons in the Division's Arsenal (M-1 Garand rifle and M4 Sherman medium tank)

On the early morning of 26 December 1943, Marines poised off the coast of Japanese- held New Britain could barely make out the mile-high bulk of Mount Talawe against a sky growing light with the approach of dawn.
