Long, long ago, two alien races fought a war of extinction. All that is left of either of them are the berserkers: vast, thinking, spacefaring, killer machines whose sole purpose is to destroy all living things. For the first time in all of their history, they have met a life form that has a chance of stopping them. In the cold reaches of space, the berserkers seize a floating laboratory full of human germ-plasm being stored for retrieval and growth in a future colonization project. The ship contains millions of human lives-but why are they not destroying them? Will the human pursuers manage to find the missing lab, defeat the berserkers, and save the nascent lives? This is a major Berserker novel-one of Saberhagen's finest-with one hell of a surprise up its sleeve.… (altro)

Good, but the shorts are better

This one is one long story, and is well done, especially if you consider how long ago it was written. However, the other Berserker books are most collections of shorts, and those are much better ( )

This Berserker book was quite good. The story kept me going the whole time, it was a real pageturner. This has to be my favorite Berserker novel so far, and I wish there was a part two!

The story is a huge berserker ship comes out of a nebula after travelling through it for thousands of years without contact with other berserkers. It captures two humans aboard a scout ship and learns of a nearby Earth Descended Human settlement that has a special space station—a colony ship with almost a billion human zygotes and the technology to grow them when needed. The berserker heads there, captures the station along with a few people stuck on board, and is pursued by a human fleet on its way back into the nebula. The fleet is pretty much decimated and the few survivors end up as prisoners on the space station as well. Three centuries pass and everyone pretty much forgot about the big berserker when a small fleet of berserkers raid the same planet and drop everything when they find a recorded account of the raid 300 years ago. They pursue the ship into the nebula with another human fleet right behind them. When the newly arrived berserkers attack the giant one, people begin to suspect something is amiss. It turns out that the large “berserker” is the last colony ship of The Builders, the ancient, thought-to-be-extinct race that built the berserkers in the first place. Their ship contained the last embryos and genetic material of their race and the ship’s computers needed the hardware from the human space station (their stuff was destroyed and couldn’t be rebuilt) to rebuild their race. And that’s pretty much where the book ended! Arg! I so wanted to read more about this storyline! ( )
