New York Times bestselling author Larry Bond launches an explosive new series! Officially designated the Joint Services Special Demands Project, "The Team" is a unique unit created to address unconventional threats in an unconventional manner, beyond the bureaucratic restraints of either the U.S. intelligence or military establishments. With an almost unlimited budget, The Team-consisting of a CIA officer, two Special Forces commandos, and one Marine-is authorized to track vital intel and then take immediate action. A radical response to perilous times, The Team has never been more needed than at this very moment: a quantity of radioactive waste, being shipped across the former Soviet Union, has gone missing. In the wrong hands, the stolen material can be converted into a "dirty bomb" capable of rendering any American city uninhabitable for centuries. With time running out, The Team must locate and neutralize the threat-unaware that their unseen enemy has already chosen a target: the island paradise of Honolulu. The intelligence gathered suggests that a terrorist long thought dead is actually alive and planning to explode a dirty bomb constructed of a deadly mix of radioactive materials. The Team must determine the identity of the terrorists, the location of the bomb and the exact nature of the planned attack.
The premise sounds more interesting than the book turned out to be. Ferg is a one-dimensional character given to one smart-ass comment after another. His sarcastic comments are not particularly clever and quickly become tedious. He is the kind of person most would quickly learn to avoid. David Slayton (Ward Larsen’s “Assassin”) and Mitch Rapp (Vince Flynn/Kyle Mills’ counter-terrorism operative) are much more interesting protagonists.
Furthermore, the book is episodic. Short scenes follow one after another without any appreciable character development or movement toward an identifiable goal.
Bond and DeFelice also failed to capitalize on a potentially interesting conflict. The President appoints his legal counsel as the head of Special Forces. The freewheeling Ferg is expected to operate within her rules of engagement and to secure her approval before taking action. She was assigned to curtail his penchant for immediate action and give careful consideration to international law. Unfortunately, that conflict is largely ignored as the two almost never interact directly. Instead, the authors tell the story in a series of short, action-oriented segments.
I was ready for this book to be over long before it ended. Even the climax is elongated by a series of unnecessary vignettes. I don’t plan to read another book in this series. (
