I use this biography on Anne Frank as an opener before reading her diary to my 7th graders. ( )

In this book, it is a history lesson yet a story all in one. This book gives background and major details about the events going on during this time, but also with the incorporation of the famous stories of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who lived during the Holocaust in Germany. She wrote in a journal every day about her life during the Holocaust, which was found and was the reason the story could be told. Through the whole book at the bottom of each page, a timeline is going across, showing important events that happened throughout the years that this book is explaining. There are pictures, maps, lists, scriptures, etc. This book really gets across how harsh and sad this time really was and how much a little girl’s life changed so quickly, and how strong she was during the hard time. A good supplement to the actual publication of Anne Frank's diary, with a compliment of engaging and informative illustrations. Gives a fair amount of background information, not only on Anne Frank, but also on World War II.

Would be helpful for a history lesson on World War II and its individual impact, not just global.

Wonderful novel with details, pictures, and diary notes about Ann Frank's life. This novel gives the facts with little embellishment, but makes it exciting for a child to read. Some of the facts are hard, so I would recommend it for an upper level elementary level child. 5th
