"Sleepy ABC Board Book" by Margaret Brown is an alphabet book that contained rhymes or small poems that went from one letter to the next. All of the letters and small poems had to do with the characters going to sleep. This is another example of what I want to do with my children's book. Originally published in 1953, this has been updated with with colorful illustrations for a new generation to enjoy. Each letter of the alphabet brings the reader a step closer to sleepy time. This is a bedtime story and concept book that should naturally help the little ones wind down however the illustrations are too bright and lively for the text. The round faced multicultural children are adorable but are too stimulating.

This ABC book is written for small children who are still learning or mastering their ABC. It is designed to be read to children before they go to sleep. All of the illustrations have characters and scenes that make the reader think it is time for bed. For example, the first page has a picture of a tiny kitten yarning on a rug in a room with a cozy fireplace. They text reads, “A is for Aaaaaah when a small kitten sighs. And the last page reads, “Z is for Zipper. Now zip into bed, not another peep GO TO SLEEP!” I think small children and adults can use this book to set a relaxing mood during bed time. There is no plot to speak of, but rather the illustrations and text work together to create a tranquil atmosphere.
