This three-part book tells the tale of a young man whose love for a girl survives beyond the grave. His first life, as Attilius Scaurus, begins in 2nd century Rome and moves to England with the Roman Legion. There, he meets and falls in love with Sergia, the daughter of a local official. Their next meeting is in late 16th century England just before the battle of the Spanish Armada, this time as Anthony Scarr and Sylvia Buckhurst. Their last meeting is in early 20th century England between the World Wars as Adrian Shard and Sonia Challice.

Although this is primarily a story of enduring love and the ties that bind two soulmates, it also focuses on the growth of the main character. In each of his lives, the young man learns, grows and develops his philosophy of service to one's country and fellow man. It was an enjoyable tale and fun to read. ( )
