Super sweet farm story about four hungry kittens... get it? haha. Great story from an animal's point of view in finding food and coming in contact with a predator. Great story overall ( )

This book would be good for primary or intermediate students. In this book, three cats are searching for food. A dog helps guide and protect them along the way until they are reunited with their mother. It is good for anyone who likes animals and a happy ending. The illustrations are beautiful watercolor. ( )

'Four Hungry Kittens' is a wordless picture book by Emily Arnold McCully. The story centers around four kittens living on a farm with their mother. From the look of the cover I figured they were stray kittens on the street. But after opening the book to the first illustration its easy to see the farm is our setting. What is a bit unclear is if they belong to the farmer or not. He sees the kittens, but it is not told if he just allows them to do as they take care of themselves. I say this because the mother kitten is first seen taking off in the tall grass and then shown halfway through the book she is looking for fresh food. The mother cat's intent was clearly illustrated when she is shown running in the grass; after careful observation I noticed a small mouse being chased. I enjoyed the spread after, where it was of the mother cat carefully stalking in the tall grass. If anyone missed these little details the following page shows mother cat pursuing the cat in the open into a feed room. Our farm owner unknowingly closes the door on the feline. The kittens are shown huddled up, waiting for her return. In the same illustration is the dog, that McCully had following the farmer around the barn, looking over at the four. After the dog tries to feed the kittens its bone it is show on a page looking confused and upset while the four hungry kittens try to figure out what this bone is for. Wanting food they are shown leaping into the container of milk the farmer farmer left to obtain more. The actions of the story remain clear as you see the dog bark at the farming milking a cow about the kittens' recklessness. McCully also shows the dog barking after seeing a mice run from a hole in the feed room where the mother cat is rescued from. The last illustration follows the mother giving her four hungry kittens the mouse she caught. It is the mother cat, the four kittens, and the dog all cuddled up together. I can tell that the dog never really was around the kittens as it followed the farmer; only getting closer and closer to the kittens throughout the story. It's pretty impressive what McCully has done with a picture with no words. But what I found most impressive is her use of the little expressions animals can give by using positions and actions to bring the life into the farm animals. ( )
