The second book in the Blue Door series, following on from The Swish of the Curtain, the classic story which inspired actors from Maggie Smith to Eileen Atkins With the rest of the Blue Door Theatre Company in London training to be actors, poor Maddy has been left all alone in the little town of Fenchester. She longs to follow the others to the big city, but she is 12 years old, and she has maths homework to do. However, Maddy has never let a bit of schoolwork come between her and her dreams. When she finds that a famous Dutch film director is in town, she leaps at the opportunity: she will be a film star. But stardom isn't an easy life (in spite of the personal dressing room and the lovely costumes) and there are setbacks and difficulties along the way. But with such a stubborn and talented leading lady as Maddy, surely even Mrs Potter-Smith and the headmistress can't stop the show from going on? Maddy Alone is the second book in the Blue Door series, following on from the classic of children's literature The Swish of the Curtain.… (altro)

At the moment I needed something totally different: something charming, cuddly and heartwarming. With relief, I turned to the second book in Pamela Brown’s Blue Door series (the first was The Swish of the Curtain, which I reviewed some time ago), telling the story of a band of ambitious children who set up a theatre company in their small town of Fenchester. In this sequel, the older children have achieved their dreams and are now studying at stage school in London, but poor Maddy, the youngest, is only twelve years old and has been told she needs to stick with ordinary school for the time being. Pushed to her limits by the thought of all the fun the others are having, Maddy begins acting up; but soon she discovers a marvellous opportunity right on her doorstep, which will change her life once and for all...

For anyone who loved "The Swish of the Curtain", you'll be delighted to know that Longwater Books have reissued it, and the second and third in the series, this one and "Golden Pavements". I do hope they'll republish the rest of them too, as they're hard to get hold of in the originals.

This is the charming and delightful story of what happens when Maddy, youngest of the Blue Door Theatre Company, is left alone during the Easter holidays when all her older friends stay on at drama school to put on a production. Only her sister, Sandra, comes home, and she finds a cross Maddy, struggling with rules and arithmetic. But one day Maddy makes a new friend, who opens up a whole new world for her...

Mrs Potter-Smith and the dear old Bishop make appearances of course, and this is just as jolly and as good a story as I remember.

Longwater Books are at http://www.longwaterbooks.co.uk - thank you for reissuing these adored favourites! ( )
