Crisply written, terrifying look into brainwashing and cults. Along with wife Dray and a cult escapee, Tim heroically rescues the college-age girl. ( )

Leah, die Tochter eines erfolgreichen Hollywoodproduzenten, ist in die Fänge einer Sekte geraten. Die Eltern wollen sie dort rausholen und beauftragen Tim Rackley mit der Sache. Es ist unmöglich, die junge Frau einfach dort herauszuholen, da muss sich Tim schon etwas Besonderes einfallen lassen.
„Die Sekte“ ist der zweite Band aus der Reihe um US Marshal Tim Rackley. Auch dieser Thriller liest sich gut und flüssig. Er ist aber auch typisch amerikanisch.
Die Charaktere sind interessant und lebendig beschrieben. Man kann nachvollziehen, dass die Eltern von Leah ihre Tochter aus der Sekte herausholen wollen. Aber die Art, wie sie mit Geld alles erreichen, gefällt mir nicht. Nach dem letzten Buch hat Tim Rackley seinen Job verloren und arbeitet nun bei einem Sicherheitsdienst. Da ist natürlich nichts für ihn, denn er ist mit Leib und Seele Marshal. Aber Will Henning, der Vater von Leah, hat so viel Einfluss, dass Tim vorrübergehend wieder in den Dienst geholt wird, um Leah zu befreien. Tim bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als sich undercover in die Sekte einzuschleusen. Doch deren Methoden sind perfide und sie manipulieren die Menschen. Es darf aber auch niemand aufbegehren oder die Sekte wieder verlassen, dass wird äußerst gefährlich.
Es ist mir schwergefallen, diesen Thriller zu lesen, denn es ist menschenverachten, wie mit den Sektenmitgliedern umgegangen wird. Auch die Methoden, welche angewandt werden, um die Menschen in die Fänge zu bekommen, sind schrecklich. Man sollte eigentlich glauben, dass die Opfer merken müssten, was da abgeht, aber sie fallen auf den charismatischen Anführer herein.
Ein sehr spannender und erschreckender Thriller. ( )

The character of Tim Rackley is also seen in a previous novel, "The Kill Clause". Tim returns to service with the US Marshals and goes deep undercover of a cult to locate Leah Henning. This cult is into mind control, which can be (and normally is) a nightmare! Tim goes in as a willing participant. What he witnesses makes him determined to shut The Program down once-and-for-all. To do so, Tim must face his own horrible past and fears. It is the only way to convince the leaders of the cult that he is sincere. But one thing is certain: Tim will either shut down The Program or die trying. I devoured this book. What a disturbing insight into a cult and how quickly people become "reprogrammed." "The Program" gives the reader a front-row view of the personalities that lead, and follow, in such groups. ( )

The Program tells the story of a disgraced cop who redeems himself by infiltrating a dangerous cult to rescue a vulnerable young woman. Hurwitz has done his research and writes with convincing detail about the methodology behind aggressive recruitment techniques, offshore financial shenanigans, and some of the more insidious kinds of mind-control. At the same time, however, the cult he writes about is so extreme as to border on caricature. Most of the members of his group are very one-dimensional, and the leader, a sort of personal growth guru gone VERY bad, is clearly a scam artist. That said, as a thriller, The Program is well-crafted and a seductive read.
