Het boek begint echter met een arts, gespecialiseerd in abortussen. Alison Beck heeft het zwaar te verduren onder anti-abortus groeperingen en als u overmatig arachnofoob bent aangelegd kunt u dit boek beter overslaan. De achtpotigen spelen een hoofdrol en Alison Beck gaat het van nabij meemaken. Ondertussen praat de rijke opdrachtgever Jack Mercier op Parker in om eens met de vader van Grace Peltier te gaan praten;

Gelukkig is de humor, naast al die ellende, ook nooit ver te zoeken;

De gebeurtenissen volgen elkaar in minder rap tempo op dan in de volgende delen dus dit geeft wat meer lucht. Dat heeft ook te maken met het feit dat de hoofdstukken worden afgewisseld met delen uit het proefschrift van Grace Peltier, waarin we wegwijs worden gemaakt in de baptistengemeenschap en hun leider dominee Faulkner;

Another knockout by this author and in the series.
This time around, extreme religious views, graphic killings and spiders. Lots and lots of spiders.
A team of lunatics led by Mr Pud who act as judge, jury, and executioner if they think you have sinned.

I freely admit that the world and escapades of Charlie Parker and Co is my favourite book series.

I've been an avid fan since I first picked up "Dark Hollow" .....and before anyone says anything, Yes! I know that this book was episode 2 of the series. At the time, 14 year old me was not aware of Every Dead Thing. All I was concerned about was making the most of the book tokens I had been given. Since then, I've gone back and read everything on multiple occasions.
I am currently working through the audiobook versions of each book in the series.

The Killing Kind was fantastically....
read/voiced/acted/performef (not sure of the correct verb). Jeff Harding has perfectly captured the sound I had in my head for Charlie's voice. He does a fantastic Louis and a not-too-bad female voice for Rachel. The only thing that didn't line up for me was the voice chosen for Angel... perhaps just a little too nasal in my opinion.

A great story line, fantastically creepy bad guys, loads of action, a good mystery and the mildest hint of the supernatural. Another great piece of work by John Connolly. ( )

I almost rated this lower, but I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and most of the story, so I think probably 3 1/2 stars is closer to what I think. Speaking of characters, this has one strange, very evil character known as Mr Pudd, whose hobby seems to be spiders and killing people, often with spiders. And if that's not bad enough, he works for someone who may be even worse. And to be truly evil like that, they have to be part of a crazy religious group that makes Jim Jones look like an angel.

Charlie is hired to investigate the death of a young woman who was interested in this group. He was hired by a rich politician to find out whether she killed herself or was murdered. He thought it couldn't hurt to find out more - boy was he wrong. Charlie didn't want to do it at first. He didn't think the money was that important, but then he realized that if you always work for charity, then pretty soon, charity will be working for you, so he took the job.

Somehow, everything begins to tie together, including his previous case with the traveling man. But I thought there were too many supernatural elements in the story, and they didn't really fit in for me. The story is mainly a gritty crime story, and the supernatural takes away from that and makes it into a semi horror story, which it isn't. So, although I like the writing and the characters, I don't know if I want to continue reading the series unless another one comes my way and I have nothing better to read. ( )

There is a dark resource within all of us, a reservoir of hurt and pain and anger upon which we can draw when the need arises. Most of us rarely, if ever, have to delve too deeply into it. That is as it should be because dipping into it costs, and you lose a little of yourself each time, a small part of all that is good and honorable and decent about you, each time you use it you have to go a little deeper, a little further down into the blackness. Strange creatures move through its depth, illuminated by a burning light from within and fueled only by the desire to survive and to kill. The danger in diving into that pool, in drinking from the dark water, is that one day you may submerge yourself so deeply that you can never find the surface again. Give in to it and you’re lost forever.
There is an interconnectedness to all things, a link between what lies buried and what lives above, a capacity for mutability that allows a good act committed in the present to rectify an imbalance in times gone by. that, in the end, is the nature of justice: not to undo the past but, by acting further down the line of time, to restore some measure of harmony, some possibility of equilibrium, so that lives may continue with their burden eased and the dead may find peace in the world beyond this one.
The nature of humanity, its essence, is to feel another’s pain as one’s own, and to act to take that pain away. There is a nobility in compassion, a beauty in empathy, a grace in forgiveness.
This is a honeycomb world. It hides a hollow heart.

The truth of nature, wrote the philosopher Democritus, lies in deep mines and caves. The stability of what is seen and felt beneath our feet is an illusion, for his life is not as it seems. Below the surface, there are cracks and fissures and pockets of stale, trapped air; stalagmites and helactites and unmapped dark rivers that flow ever downward. It is a place of caverns and stone waterfalls, a labyrinth of crystal tumors and frozen columns where history becomes future, then becomes now.

For in total blackness, time has no meaning.

The present is imperfectly layered on the past; it does not conform flawlessly at every point. things fall and die and their decay creates new layers, thickening the surface crust and adding another thin membrane to cover what lies beneath, new worlds resting on the remains of the old. Day upon day, year upon year, century upon century, layers are added and the imperfections multiply. The past never truly does. It is there, waiting, just below the surface of the now. We stumble into it occasionally, all of us, through remembrance and recall. We summon to mind former lovers, lost children, departed parents, the wonder of a single day when we captured, however briefly, the ineffable, fleeting beauty of the world. These are our memories. We hold them close and call them ours, and we can find them when we need them.

But sometimes that choice is made for us: a piece of the present simply falls away, and the past is exposed like old bone. Afterward, nothing can ever be the same again, and we are forced to reassess the form of what we believed to be true in the light of new revelations about its substance. The truth is revealed by a misstep and the sudden sense that something beneath our feet rings false. The past bubbles out like molten lava, and lives turn to ash in its path.
