"Fake spirit medium Gretchen Acorn is happy to help when her best (read: wealthiest) client hires her to look into the unexplained phenomena preventing the sale of her bridge partner's struggling goat farm. Gretchen may be a complete fraud, but she'd liketo think she's a beneficent one. So if "cleansing" the historic property will help a nice old man get on with his retirement and put some much-needed cash in her pockets at the same time, who's she to say no? Of course, it turns out said bridge partner isn't the kindly AARP member Gretchen imagined-Charlie Waybill is young, hot as hell, and extremely unconvinced that Gretchen can communicate with the dead. (Which, fair.) Except, to her surprise, Gretchen finds herself face-to-face with Everett: the veryreal, very chatty ghost that's been wreaking havoc during every open house. And he wants her to help ensure Charlie avoids the same family curse that's had Everett haunting Gilded Creek Goat Farm since the 1920s. Now, Gretchen has one month to convince Charlie of the dangers that will befall him should he sell the property. Unfortunately, hard work and honesty seem to be the best way to win over the stubborn farmer-not exactly Gretchen's strengths. She has to try, though, because trust isn't the only thing growing between them, and the risk of losing Charlie to the spirit realm looms over her almost as annoyingly as Everett himself. To save the goat farm, its resident phantom, and the man she's beginning to love, Gretchen will need to pull off the greatest con of her life: being fully, genuinely, messily herself."--… (altro)

A woman, Gretchen Acorn, who claims to be a medium so she can bilk her clients (but not gouge them), is asked by a wealthy client to assist her friend who is trying to sell his farm. However, the sale always falls through. Gretchen heads to a goat farm and meets the goat farmer, Charlie Waybill, as well as a ghost, Everett, who is haunting the farm, telling Gretchen that Charlie will die if he sells and the farm isn't help by a Waybill. Charlie calls her out as a fraud and doesn't believe her that she sees a ghost. Gretchen needs to convince Charlie to keep the farm so he can live. She devises a plan, and finds herself in the process.
Cute, but I loved Mrs. Nash's Ashes, Adler's first book more. ( )

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this story! Gretchen is a fake psychic from a long line of opportunistic charlatans. She only takes clients' money if she thinks she can leave them better off than she found them, which is good because otherwise it would have been hard to like her in the beginning. She has transactional relationships but nothing deeper, and denies herself true intimacy until she gets to know Charlie. Charlie owns a struggling goat farm he's trying to sell but is being thwarted by the antics of a ghostly ancestor (the delightful Everett) who is trying to save him from a curse.

The book reads as a bit of a caper although it evens out about halfway through into a more thoughtful read (but still with fun/funny touches). I loved the comedic thread going through the whole story. I loved the premise of a skilled faker realizing that what they've been faking is actually real. And I really enjoyed watching Gretchen open herself up to being less cautious in relationships, and open up to the idea that she's a much better person than she thought. And what can I say about Everett?? He's charming and fun and a TV addict, and I would absolutely have read a whole book just about him. I need to go back and read the author's first book, and I'm genuinely looking forward to more from her in the future. ( )

I don’t normally enjoy a book with paranormal activity, but I loved this one by Sarah Adler. Gretchen Acorn is a fake medium, just trying to do the best she can to succeed without hurting anyone. She receives a lucrative offer she can’t refuse from one of her favorite clients. All she has to do is banish a ghost from an old goat farmer’s property so he can sell it. Turns out the old goat farmer is really a young, handsome, if cranky, hunk who is onto her scam right away.

This is a gorgeous slow-burn romance that left me in happy tears. The characters were believable and delightful. Their journey to trust in each other was heartwarming. 4⭐️
