Little Red Riding Hood, written by the Brothers Grimm, illustrated by Ben Mahan is a story about a little girl who was sent to take goodies to her grandmother, who lived in the woods. Along the way, she meets a wolf who tricks her into straying from her path.

I have read several versions of this story, but this particular story was a bit frightening. In the end, when the woodcutter cuts the wolf's stomach open and the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood pop out, then place heavy rocks inside the wolf was too graphic for some young children. I thought the illustrations were flat, but colorful. If I read this version to my 4 year-olds, I think I would change that part of the story. I do like that in the end, Red did learn that she should listen to her mother.

Extension Activity: We would make a nutritious snack for grandmother. Fruit Salad:strawberries, pineapple, pears,& bananas

Provide children with one piece of each fruit. Demostrate how to hold and cut fruit into small pieces, put into bowls, and enjoy. Make sure to wash hands before beginning (children too). Discuss healthy food choices. ( )
