A really powerful book that explores the seamier side of John Paul 2's Vatican. Written by the author of In God's Name, the precisely researched book identifies unseemly actions and inactions in many areas. From Vatican finances to the deplorable priest scandal and the Church's incessant efforts to obfuscate and delay legal action, the book points out a pattern of unethical behavior that is both shocking and encyclopedic.

The Vatican Bank scandal was better chronicled in the author's previous book. But the tremendous level of detail that he provides to the 2000 years long priest scandal and the Pope's unwillingness to address it shows a bureaucracy that I am certain Christ would find impossible to countenance.

It has been said that the goal of any bureaucracy is self perpetuation. Yallop offers up ample evidence that in the case of the church, this appears to be true. (
