On a beautiful September afternoon, a hike through the pristine wild of Still Waters Chasm become a path of mystery and deadly danger for Gabriela Domenici and her boyfriend, Daniel Red Deer. First, they take a side trail to an inexplicable construction site in the middle of the woods, where every tree has been cut down and a huge truck bearing strange-looking equipment is parked in the middle. As they continue their hike to the lake, they find a man convulsing with his last breaths, not far from the lifeless body of a woman. After going for help, Gabriela and Daniel return to the scene--only to find the two people and their canoe and gear are gone. It seems impossible that two bodies could revive and leave on their own, but there is no other explanation. When she conducts a library outreach program in the rural Town of Livery, near Still Waters Chasm, Gabriela discovers a community that is both curious and suspicious. There, she meets Lucinda Nanz, an herbalist whose encyclopedic knowledge of plants for help and harm is both fascinating and troubling, and Wendy Haughton, a young woman who desperately wants to sell an old drawing of unknown origin so she can escape her abusive husband. Despite the state police's warnings to stay out of the investigation, and Daniel's urging to not get involved, Gabriela cannot stay away from Livery and Still Waters Chasm--which puts her on a collision course with yet another murder and people who will stop at nothing to prevent her from getting too close to the truth that could destroy chasm.… (altro)

Librarians these days have to deal with many challenges- budget cuts, crumbling buildings, people who want to ban books, governments passing laws that are unrealistic (and unconstitutional) among them. Ohnita Harbor librarian Gabriela Domenici has to deal with even more dangerous situations in Patricia Crisafulli's second book in her Ohnita Harbor Mysteries series, The Secrets of Still Waters Chasm.

In the first book in the series, The Secrets of Ohnita Harbor, Gabriela discovered a dead body and was nearly killed by the head of the library board of directors as he tried to steal a valuable relic donated to the library.

In the new book, Gabriela understandably suffers from anxiety from her near-death experience. When she and her boyfriend Daniel are out hiking a trail in the nearby Still Waters Chasm in the Adirondack Mountains, they come across some huge construction vehicles but no one around. It looks like the trucks may be drilling deep underground on the public land, but for what reason?

On their way out of the park, they stumble upon a man and a woman and an overturned canoe. The woman is dead, and while they attempt CPR on the man, he appears dead as well. With foam coming out of their mouths, could they have eaten something poisonous?

Gabriela and Daniel move around to try and get a cell phone signal and call the police. When the police arrive and Gabriela and Daniel take them to the bodies, the bodies and the kayak are gone.

So now Gabriela is involved in another mystery. She also attempts to help Wendy, a young woman who inherited an antique drawing of what appears to be some type of early sail. The young woman wants to sell the antique to get away from an abusive boyfriend, and Gabriela, a research expert, promises to help her discover the worth of her drawing.

She also befriends Lucinda, an herbalist with an expertise in plants and their healing properties. There are people in town who do not like Lucinda, they call her a witch and believe she poisons people.

Daniel is unhappy that Gabriela is getting involved with people and situations that could be trouble for her. She is still fragile from her last experience.

Crisafulli based Ohnita Harbor on the city of Oswego in Central New York, a place where I attended college, and anyone who lives in the area will recognize the castle library where Gabriela works. I like how she works in interesting topics- fracking, inventor Robert Fulton, library politics- that enlighten the reader.

I enjoyed getting reacquainted with characters from the first book, like Gabriela's fiesty Italian mom Agnese and the staff of the library, but you need not have read the first book to enjoy this one. The mystery kept me turning the pages and I admit to holding my breath at the end.

Crisafulli's The Secrets of Still Water Chasm is a fast-paced mystery that elevates the genre with great characters and a fascinating setting. I'm looking forward to a third book in the series. ( )

Book two in the series took us back to the library in Ohnita Harbor and back into the lives of Gabriela, her mother Agnese and her new boyfriend Daniel. The big change is that Gabriela is now the head librarian. When she's out on a hike with Daniel they find two bodies. They leave the area to get cell service to call the police but when they get back to the lake, the bodies are gone. As the head librarian, she starts a library outreach program in the small neighboring town of Livery, near Still Waters Chasm. She meets some interesting people including an herbalist and her friend Wendy who wants to sell an old drawing to make enough money to leave her abusive husband. Of course, Gabriela agrees to work on authenticating the drawing which ends up getting her in major trouble not only with the town but with her boyfriend Daniel who wants her to quit doing dangerous things and take care of herself and her problems with Wendy's husband become a real danger. Gabriela's mom gets involved in a kidnapping with her daughter and both of their lives are put in danger. This part of the novel had me rapidly turning pages in hopes that both women would survive.

Once again, Gabriela puts her life in danger by trying to help other people. I'm not sure if it's more bravery or impulsiveness that put her into the life and death situations but either way, it makes for fantastic page turning reading. She is a well written character that I really enjoyed reading about and once again, her mother is one of the best characters and always has something to say about whatever her daughter is doing. It's apparent that they don't always get along because they are so much alike -- both are outspoken and stubborn.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next trip to the library in Ohnita Harbor. ( )
