Summary: Though heavy in content and richly deep in history, enough to intimidate younger readers, this book had amazing pictures that I saw as basically the whole upside to it. I'm not a huge fan of American history, or the Civil War in specific, but this book was nice in that it provided unbias factual based information based around incredible pictures.

Personal reflection / commentary: This would be a good book for an older reader, or even an adult who is interested in civil war history. I loved the artful and enriching pictures! It totally made the book worth it. ( )

Wonderful book to teach older students about the Civil War. The pictures are wonderfully vivid and bring history to life. As they say, pictures are definitely worth a thousand words in this book.

I think this book had good pictures that really showed what was happening in the war. I would use this in the classroom in a history lesson to show the children about the war and use the book to describe this. The author did a good job of not letting her opinion get in the way of the book, she used the information that she had and made a book with the information. The concept of the book was to show people what really happen in the war and describe the struggles that was going on. The theme was the Civil War and pictures from the Civil War. ( )

This book gets 5 stars just for the photos. Never mind the great amount of written information to go along with it! What a powerful book all joking aside. It's created around the photo's of Mathew B. Brady, a famous Civil was photographer that worked out of New York. The book has two functions as a basic biography of Brady, as well as a vivid chronicle of the Civil War. I really takes you to a different time and place, and forces you to appreciate the study of the past and why we do it. ( )

A basic overview of the civil war that relied on Brady's pictures very little. As a civil war novel it lacked in detail and as a picture book that showed the struggle and loss of the war it lacked as well. As a history fanatic I enjoy reading anything related to history but for those who struggle with this field I would not recommend this lack luster book. ( )
