The third in McVeigh's prizewinning series of standalone historical romances. "Should she reject me again, I shall have to wed - as I swore I never would - for dynasty alone. I can only ever love Elizabeth Bennet." Love is put to the test in this fresh spin on Jane Austen's starriest novel, entwining original and classic characters in a tale of passion and self-discovery. Alice McVeigh puts the spotlight on Darcy in this witty and imaginative re-telling of Austen's classic tale. In a timeless story of love amid the clash of social classes, Darcy is faced with a terrible choice: to stay in London to force Wickham's hand - or to go to Rome, to salvage his family's reputation. With a new Darcyesque slant, omitted scenes from the original, and an extra helping of humour - as well as excerpts from The Wisdom and Wit of Miss Mary Bennet - this is a fresh new Pride and Prejudice with (wedding) bells on! Classy, clean, and classic, Darcy is perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer - and, of course, Jane Austen.… (altro)

Being a huge fan of Jane Austen, and also having read Harriet by Alice McVeigh, which I enjoyed, I was looking forward to reading McVeigh's newest work Darcy.
I had high hopes that this book would be a good one & it did start that way. Caroline Bingley being called out by Louisa for incessantly hounding Darcy & being likened to a Pekinese was a laugh out loud moment. Unfortunately the rest of the book was a bit drab.
The story is told from Darcy's point of view, with many if Austen's exact words & Darcy's thoughts inserted. There is a frankly unbelievable & un-Austen like tangent about Darcy's past with an opera singer. Where McVeigh's other work, Harriet, gave you another perspective (or alternate reality) on what these characters might have been like it was faithful enough to have you thinking this works & maybe thats true. Darcy having an affair with an opera singer is so far from the character we have known & love it is laughable. To do that & than turn around & make such harsh criticism about Lizzy's family would make him a hypocrite. Had his past held a fiance who died or past love who ran away with the footman would have been more in character & more believable.
The secondary voice in the book is Mary Bennet who's inner monolog leaves me wanting to beat her upside the head with the oft mentioned Fordyce's Sermons. I would have more enjoyed a glimpse into the mind if Louisa Hurst, Caroline's sister who's keen wit & insight peaked my interest.
If you aren't a Pride & Prejudice fan & do not know the story than you may enjoy this book. For me it just didn't add to Austen's world anything of note.
This book was given to me by Librarything Early Reviewers program for my honest opinion. ( )

I liked how the author dove into Mr. Daarcy's feelings and POV via his diaries. It helped the reader to understand why Darcy acts the way he does. Somethingsare redundant, as we already have the basic story ofthe Bennett Sisters and their loves.

I want to thank netgalley fhecace to readthis Pride and Prejudice variation. ( )

This was a fun book, but make sure you’re up on your Austen. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I should have reread P&P before reading it.

This book follows the original Pride and Prejudice but makes some small additions.
POV shifts from 3rd person (following many of the characters) to journal or written entries of Darcy and Mary. The author added in some additional story bit doesn't change the original. We do get to learn more about Mary and see her story more.

I did enjoy it, but the backstop for Darcy felt forced and odd. Not really necessary. I like Mary's additions more.

Still a clean version with a kiss at most.

I am a big fan of Alice McVeigh’s writing and story building. This variation is no exception. I love not only getting an inside look at Darcy’s side of the classic story, but also peaking into the mind or shining a light on lesser side characters. Darcy is such a complex and tight lipped character so it was nice to see his faults come out center stage along with his thoughts and justifications. His time in Rome is surprising but an interesting addition to the story. Louisa Hurst gets more of a spotlight and gets to show more of her practical (for the time) if not manipulating agenda. She is a bit more of a mastermind and I’m here for it. I’m also loving the POV we get from Mary. She is so endearing and has such character development it is a beautiful treat to read. It’s so interesting to see how her mind works! Don’t even get me started on Timothy Lucas! He is a cinnamon roll and an additional hero you didn’t know you needed. I obviously love his addition to the story. Amazing writing and beautifully imagined story that I definitely recommend. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. ( )
