I found this book a bit of a slow starter-- or maybe I was just frustrated with the "hero"? for being so close lipped and not sharing information/talking to his princess wife. The story came together slowly and then - when I was fully invested in it-- I hit the last page! UGHHH I REALLY want to read the next book LOL

So with that frustration out of the way.... This was a really good story that leaves you wanting more. Glad I had the chance to read it. ( )

A romance story with a twist and a married couple who don't really seem to be married at all. The marriage is arranged simply for the dowry to finance the construction of a temple beacon which could have ramifications throughout the world should it fail to be built.

The couple were to be kept separated so as to prevent any detraction from the building works, however Calanthe, the bride, decides her place is beside her husband, and in her own way, her logic and ideas subtly influence the progress of the project rather than detracting as was feared.

Looking forward to reading the sequel. ( )

An engaging fantasy romance set in a complex world heavily influenced by constellations and divine pantheons. The narrative centers on one construction site and a couple in an arranged marriage with some baffling stipulations. There's some awkward language and I got a bit frustrated about the long-drawn-out explanation over what was being built and what an unnecessarily huge chunk of the plot it was, but overall, I enjoyed the characters and the world. Recommended if you like a tight focus on the will-they-or-won't-they between the couple and also the slow reveal of an incredibly detailed religious and magical context. ( )

This novel has an unusual plot that I found rather intriguing. In addition, the characters are complex and show a realistic array of emotions. Calanthe is my favourite because she's strong, intelligent, capable, and innovative. I'm very curious to see what will happen to her, Sanders, and their companions in the sequel! ( )
