The English translation probably doesn't do the original Spanish version justice.

It was a well written book which draws the reader into a world of Patrons and Indians as the social order is collapsing. I, however, found it unpleasant and irritating to read because all actions were ruled by superstition, a superstition that wrought destruction and nothing else. Partially because of this, none of the characters were likable. As a result, I didn't care what happened to them. ( )
