Gemma Doyle won't be spooked when a body shows up at the psychic fair in bestselling author Vicki Delany's ninth Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery. When a psychic fair arrives in West London, Gemma Doyle, owner of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, wants nothing to do with it. But somehow, at the urging of Donald Morris, an enthusiastic Sherlockian, she finds herself talked into attending a séance, along with baker and best friend Jayne Wilson, store assistant, Ashleigh, and former pop star Bunny Leigh. But to her surprise, Gemma finds herself banned from the séance and shown the door. Curious, she listens in from outside the room. The medium informs a disappointed Donald that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will not be able to make it tonight. Then, Gemma hears a voice cut off, a cry for help, a scream. Gemma bursts into the library to see that someone has collapsed on the table--dead. The windows are all locked, and Gemma was guarding the only door. Someone in this room is a murderer. But who? The game is once again afoot for Gemma Doyle, as she hunts a killer. But, this time, is the killer of flesh and blood or had the medium summoned doom from beyond the veil?… (altro)

A Psychic Fair descends on West London. Gemma Doyle's bookshop, with its' emphasis on Holmes, does a brisk business with books about Sir Arthur's fascination with fairies and the like. Gemma and Jayne wind up being invited to a seance. Gemma attends grudgingly, is promptly barred from the room and when the medium winds up dead, a locked room mystery reveals many suspects. ( )

Gemma is coerced into attending a seance, almost. She really wants nothing to do with the newly arrived psychic, but her friends are insistence. When they all arrive at the appointed time for the seance, Gemma is politely but firmly asked to leave, since the psychic says her negative energy will adversely affect the spirits. Of course, Gemma complies, then eavesdrops at the closed door. A scream during the seance alerts her that something is dreadfully wrong. Indeed, a murder has been committed in the closed room. The game is afoot as Gemma goes about what she does best: observing and solving the murder. This series never gets old; it just keeps getting better. This installment is a bit off the rails with the paranormal aspect. Readers can decide for themselves what to believe and what really happened. Regardless, it’s an intriguing mystery and an interesting conundrum for Gemma and her friends as they go about disproving the psychic and gathering clues. ( )

I always love how Vicki Delany is able to sprinkle interesting and cool facts about Sherlock and Doyle into her stories.
The mystery remained, just that, until the reveal. I was not able to guess who the killer was but it all made sense once you found out the who and why.
I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series.

Kim Hicks did a good job narrating this novel and I will look for books narrated by Kim in the future. ( )

I’m a late joiner to this cozy mystery series starring a British expat who owns a Sherlock Holmes–themed bookstore on Cape Cod. Read my full review here.

Publication is expected January 9.

Vicki Delany's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop cozy series continues to be one of my favorites. In The Sign of Four Spirits, the author uses Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's interest in the occult to bring a psychic twist to a strong locked room mystery.

However strong the mysteries are, the characters keep bringing me back to this series. Gemma's Uncle Arthur, who's never home, but feels free to volunteer Gemma for various community projects. Her best friend, Jayne Wilson, who is a marvelous baker and will follow Gemma anywhere even though she's never quite sure what's going on. And what about Gemma's employee Ashleigh, who says, "I've learned not to ask too many questions. Gemma comes, Gemma goes. Gemma does strange things." At least Gemma is in the store often enough to keep bestselling items ordered and delivered!

I highly recommend this series if you like bookshops, Sherlock Holmes, strong mysteries, and plenty of quirky, lovable characters. I'm looking forward to Gemma's next investigation.
