It's the summer of 1944, and Peter and his family have been on what feels - to a young boy, at least - like an unforgettable adventure. Getting to sleep in a tent, then under the sky, exploring a disused factory, catching butterflies in the meadows - there is a lot to find exciting as this journey progresses. But as bombs fall from the blue sky outside Vienna, Peter realizes this adventure must surely be a nightmare. Along with his parents, he arrives at the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp and the horrors they have tried so hard to shield Peter from are now impossible to avoid. But, even in the face of terrible losses and unspeakable hardship, Peter and his mother do not give up. They must never stop trying to get home. An extraordinary true story from a real-life survivor of Bergen-Belsen.… (altro)

Excellent True story about Peter's journey from Hungary in World War 2 to the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The determination of Peter's mother to keep him alive despite her terrible losses and hardship is absolutely incredible and the book should really be called the Mother who didn't want her son to die as her sacrifices and careful planning to make sure they save food and do extra jobs to earn food throughout her time in the camp is the reason why Peter survives. Gut wrenchingly simple at times - statements like "And that was the last time we saw Aunt Anna or Zsuzsi." You see the war through both the eyes of a child of 6 years old but also knowing what is really happening ( and that it actually happened) makes the book all the more poignant. It would be a great companion novel to Boy in Striped PJs or Once by Morris Gleitzman. ( )
