In her small hometown, librarian Ruth Cornier has always felt like an outsider, even as her beloved father rains fire-and-brimstone warnings from the pulpit at Holy Fire Baptist. Unfortunately for Ruth, the only things the townspeople fear more than the God and the Devil are the myths that haunt the area, like the story of the Low Man, a vampiric figure said to steal into sinners' bedrooms and kill them on moonless nights. When a skull is found deep in the swamp next to mysterious carved symbols, Bottom Springs is thrown into uproar--and Ruth realizes only she and Everett, an old friend with a dark past, have the power to comb the town's secret underbelly in search of true evil. A dark and powerful novel like fans have come to expect from Ashley Winstead, Midnight is the Darkest Hour is an examination of the ways we've come to expect love, religion, and stories to save us, the lengths we have to go to in order to take back power, and the monstrous work of being a girl in this world.… (altro)

Good girl meets bad boy. The couple discovers that all the leaders in their small town, including her pastor father, are involved in selling narcotics via organized crime. Of course, the local librarian is involved in figuring out what is going on by saving all the past newspapers on microfilm. Yay, librarians! ( )

This book made it hard to stick to a bedtime. I couldn’t put it down! I wasn’t sure how to feel about the ending at first. However, the more I thought about it the more I realized it was the perfect ending for Ruth and Ever’s story! ( )

Your belief is such a powerful tool. The beliefs pressed upon you, which carve you in to what others want, are just as strong. To be so young and impressionable and ache for a different reality can be all consuming. Maybe you believe too much.
This book felt a bit too much like a YA for my taste, regardless of the Twilight tie in which is there for a very important developmental element, so don’t let that be your reason to pass.
The change for Ruth was slow but good and her experiences with religion ran all to familiar with me and may upset or deter others. It drew me in and had me on her side 100%. Most everything was very predictable but the large tie in was satisfying. ( )

Overall, I enjoyed the journey. I felt like there were a lot of characters in the book and a lot of things that all tied together. There was also a ton of description in the book that I felt slowed it down a little bit. It definitely was a book that I could put down, but at the same time, didn't feel like I wanted to DNF it. I will say after reading this, I'm a little hesitant to read any other of Ashley Winstead's books. In the end, it is like a Dexter meets Bonnie and Clyde meets Twilight. And Ruth, the daughter of the reverend or whatever they call him in the book tries to take down the town. I will say, I felt like I knew the town and understood the small town and how everyone knew everything, and the "leaders" of the town hid secrets, etc. Good description of small town living. I felt like the book could've been about 100 pages shorter. ( )

3.5 stars, there are parts I really liked and others I really didn't need. I like the religious trauma themes, and the mystery and relationship were enjoyable.. The Twilight angle was not my favorite, and what was that ending? ( )

Five hours and forty-six minutes after a trapper pulls the skull from the depths of Starry Swamp, shaking sludge and Spanish moss out of its eye sockets, the entire town of Bottom Springs, Louisiana--all five-thousand-two-hundred-twenty-nine Christian souls and the small handful of Godless heathens--had heard the news.
