The stories of the fabled village of Chelm and its inhabitants are favorites in Jewish folklore. Newcomer Richard Ungar captures the joyous spirit of these folktales in his words and pictures.The people of Chelm were crazy about the moon and the way it bathed the village in light. Not content to wait for the moon to rise, some of the villagers decide to capture it so they could see it whenever they wish. First the carpenter tries to reach it with a ladder. The next night the cook tries to entice the moon with soup. The musician, the weaver, and the fisherman all use their arts to try to lure the moon down to the village. To everyone's surprise, young Rachel succeeds. But how does she capture the moon?… (altro)

A vibrantly illustrated Jewish folktale about the people of a town called Chelm who foolishly desire and try without success to capture the moon by luring and trapping it and a little girl, Rachel, who manages to capture it's beauty and luminescence by thinking outside the box. Great storytelling. Circular format allows for predictions. Beautiful watercolor and color pencil artwork could be an art lesson. (

The village wants to capture the moon and so everyone attempts to catch it, but no one succeeds. Rachel declares that she can. She gathers a keg filled with water and when the moon shines bright, she angles it so the moon's reflection is captured. The village cheers. Cute story to read to a class and see if they can figure out how Rachel will catch the moon. (

Everyone in the town wants to capture the moon, and everyone tries anything they can to do so. They try their hardest to capture it but no one succeeds. Finally Rachel tells the town that she knows how to do it, and turns out she did. Good story circle book. (

The foolish folk of Chelm, not content to wait for the moon to rise each evening, try to capture its luminescence permanently. WHen neither a ladder, a net, nor delicious smelling soup can lure the moon down to earth, a little girl named Rachel captures its reflection in a barrel of water. (
