HTML:From acclaimed author A.M. Arthur comes a tender, sexy new novel in the Woods Ranch series. He thought his cowboy days were behind him. But lifeâ??and loveâ??had other plans. Michael Pearce left the small-town life of Weston and cattle ranching for the hustle of Austin, and never looked backâ??until his father suffers a stroke and requires in-home care. Josiah Sheridan became a certified nursing assistant after seeing how wonderful his single mother's in-home aides were before she died. He wants to help people, and he does his best with the work he can find in small-town Weston, Texas. He also lives a complicated life with his loverâ??to the rest of the world, they're just roommates. Behind closed doors, their life is...strained. Meeting Michael, a kind and openly gayâ??not to mention much olderâ??man, gives Josiah a glimpse into a brighter, happier world. He loves Michael's self-confidence and plethora of life stories. But it will take patience, planning, and more courage than Josiah thinks he has to finally break free from his old life and find real love with Michael. There's the nostalgia around ranching and cowboys; there's the decency of country folk who lead a life of hard work and kindness to neighbours - that's the kind of thing I mean.
I enjoyed Book 2 just as much as the other two I've read, #1 and #3, but if I hadn't read those first, this one may not have been as good ... but it has that mood...
I didn't find Josiah, the assistant nurse who is an independent home nurse, as interesting as I had anticipated after his introduction in Bood 1 - after all, he was the one that came to the rescue of Brand in the knife fight when Brand stepped in front of Hugo when he was being attached by the crazy bully stepbrother in Book 1!
Instead, Josiah has had an "underprivileged" life, he's a survivor of that life and the later abuse of a man he trusted, Sheriff Shamus. There's no room in the grim backstory that AM Arthur gives Josiah for more individuality or idiosyncrasy. He's a good person, which is a lot but I wanted more.
Michael I liked, but did I know him? - we ever really learn why he disappeared from his father's life for 20 years. ( )
