Strange, wondrous things happen in these two short stories, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and The Sea of Lost Time, which are both the perfect introduction to Gabriel García Márquez, and a wonderful read for anyone who loves the magic and marvels of his novels. 'The world had been sad since Tuesday. Sea and sky were a single ash-grey thing and the sands of the beach, which on March nights glimmered like powered light, had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish. The light, was so weak at noon that when Pelayo was coming back to the house after throwing away the crabs, it was hard for him to see what it was that was moving and groaning in the rear of the courtyard. He had to go very close to see that It was and old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn't get up impeded by his enormous wings.' A celebration of one of the world's most loved writers. Sixteen beautiful new editions, also available in ebook for the first time.… (altro)

This is a tale about a being who seems to be a very old man with wings but whom a wise neighbour woman declares to be an angel.

People from all around flock to see him, but do not treat him properly.

The man whose yard he is found takes him in and puts him in the chicken coop.

Eventually the angel recovers enough to begin to fly and flies away.

In the story the author depicts the unkind behaviour of human beings. He also makes fun of the Church: the local priest comes to see the angel but is doubtful that he truly can be one since he can’t speak Latin, which he deems to be the language of God!

This is a humorous/ironic tale, well worth reading. ( )
