En este volumen se reúnen, en una traducción de Julio Gómez de la Serna, los principales relatos que Poe dedicó a todos estos temas que hoy configuran el acervo de la ciencia ficción. con una imaginación, una soberbia audacia de pensamiento y una enorme visión de futuro, el gran clásico del siglo XIX nos desgrana aquí una excelente literatura a caballo entre la ficción y la realidad, una joya digna de figurar en todas las bibliotecas.

En una época dominada por el electromagnetismo y la explotación intensiva de los inventos mecánicos, con el subsiguiente auge de todas las formas de trascendentalismo, no es extraño que Poe se sintiera atraído por temas tales como el galvanismo, el mesmerismo, el viaje por el tiempo, la resurrección de los muertos y la posesión demoníaca, junto con temas hoy tan actuales como los viajes por el aire y por el espacio. La traducción y selección son buenas pero saben a poco; lo que merece Poe es una edición de sus narraciones completas. ( )

This book collects all of Edgar Allan Poe's short fiction that could be reasonably dubbed "science fiction"-- and perhaps some of it, unreasonably dubbed. It's an odd, difficult collection; one suspects that Poe's influence on modern sf comes not via his actual sf, but the material he wrote that we now would dub "horror"; surely "The Fall of the House of Usher" or "The Tell-Tale Heart" has inspired more sf than "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion" or "Some Words with a Mummy."

Still, this is an important and interesting set of stories. You really can see Poe working through what he thinks the genre we now call "science fiction" is: fantastic extrapolation, but with scientific rigor or at least claims to rigor. This especially comes through in the stories that were intended to be hoaxes, such as "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall," which tries really hard to convince you it's about a man who really did go to the moon.

To my surprise, I ended up liking some of the really weird stuff, like the dialogues between dead(?) spirits, "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion" and "The Colloquy of Monos and Una."  "Some Words with a Mummy" was good fun, and there were creepy moments in "The System of Dr Tarr and Prof. Fether."

What the heck is up with "Eureka," though? A more brave mind than mind will have to try to untangle that.

"Introduction" sætter Poe's tekster ind i en tidsmæssig sammenhæng med Faraday, Galvani, Volta og Ohm og de øvrige videnskaber.
"A Note on the Text" handler om at mange af teksterne findes i flere udgaver, fordi Poe selv rettede i mange af dem efter udgivelsen.
"Bibliography" er forslag til yderligere læsning, hvis man vil bore dybt i Poe's forfatterskab.

"Ms. Found in a Bottle" handler om en mand der er med et skib, der går ned og havner på et andet skib, der også går ned.

"A Descent Into the Maelström" handler om en mand der er med et skib, der går ned i en malstrøm, men han redder sig via en tønde.

"A Tale of the Ragged Mountains" handler om en mand, Augustus Bedlo, eller måske Oldeb, der i en morfinrus ser en virkelig scene fra fortiden, hvor han selv bliver slået ihjel. Siden dør han selv på samme vis som sin person i drømmen.
"The Balloon-Hoax" handler om ???
"Mesmeric Revelation" handler om en mand der hypnotiserer en døende invalid, Mr. Vankirk, og udspørger vedkommende, måske også efter døden er indtruffet.
"The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade" handler om Storvisirens datter Scheherazade der bliver gift med kongen, der plejer at lade sine hustruer henrette efter 1 nat. I eventyret slipper hun med livet ved at fortælle historier, men Poes fortæller hævder at det er løgn. Faktisk endte Scheherazade med at blive henrettet, men hun tog hævn over kongen ved ikke at have fortalt ham alle sine historier.
"Some Words with a Mummy" handler om ???

"The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" handler om et lig der bliver mesmeriseret i dødsstunden og rådner på få minutter, da det syv måneder senere bliver vækket.

"Von Kempelen and His Discovery" handler om en mand, Von Kempelen, der har fundet de vises sten eller i alt fald en måde at forvandle bly til guld.

"Commentary " er 94 sider med grundige kommentarer til alle historierne.
"Appendix 1748-1848: Select Chronology of post-Newtonian Science in the Century preceding Eureka" er en liste over væsentlige naturvidenskabelige opdagelse i de 100 år, der dækkes fra Leyden-flasker til opdagelsen af Neptun.
